Very bad pic.: Violently Protective Girlfriend

IIRC, in regards to the Amy example, a few seconds after that specific pic, there was a screen with her that was a close up with the same pose (pretty easy context as well I think), but she had a really pissed off look on her face that was just screaming, "Get any closer and I'll kill you".

If we could just find a pic involving Katara, that would also be a pretty effective pic as well.

I think we need to specify more what we need in the picture.

There are three elements:

  1. : Boyfriend who is being protected
  2. : The threat
  3. : The Girlfriend who must appear "violent" towards the threat, and be between the boyfriend and the threat.

On the Avatar picture, as perhaps the only troper here who has not bothered to see the movie, I'd like to say that it took me forever to figure out that the person on the ground is being protected (and only because of the discussion from others explaining the scene). I thought she was threatening him. Crouching over someone while brandishing a knife- without context, I don't think it depicts what we want.

A similar objection was raised to the Mirai Nikki picture I suggested. Yuno is deflecting a knife thrown at her boyfriend. However, the action lines and perspective caused some tropers here to think she was threatening her boyfriend. (I guess they didn't see the deflected knife).

So it seems to me it would be better if the picture was more clear about the protective aspect. This means we probably want a profile image with the protected boyfriend behind the girlfriend's back, while the girlfriend is facing (and threatening) the threat.

It's been about a month now but I figured I may as well bump this.

Sackett, the Shive example seems to me to show the 3 criteria you listed, what do you think of that example?

Bingo.

And the manga version, if the text helps get the idea across better.

Though technically she isn't really his girlfriend... ...at least she thinks she is.

Edit: Here's another version with the text sharpened a tad; not sure if it makes a difference.

That image is actually pretty good. The text doesn't suffer too much from the image size either, but it is a little wordy. HOWEVER, only her "How dare you"line is really needed for the image.

I would've tried to trim it out so that's all the text shown, but then I'd be leaving out Smoker over on the right, or Luffy on the left, and they're both kinda necessary to get the point across.

Those One Piece images are too busy for my tastes. It's hard to see exactly what's going on.

I prefer the anime version. It gets the idea across okay, and while the dialogue helps, it makes the picture too busy.

The anime version isn't much better. Where's the "violently" part? She's sort of just standing there pointing. What's that next to her head, some sort of hand puppet? Why is there a giant snake thing drawing my focus? Is she getting Scaled Up or something? Or is it just a pet...Rayquaza? I can't tell what's going on.

...Anyone else having trouble figuring it out?

I can tell just fine, though I know the source material.

I don't know the source material (at least not beyond the first few chapters of the manga, before 2 of the 3 characters there are introduced), and it seemed pretty clear what was going on.

I get the protective bit but not the violence, seems to be a disconnect with the girl and the snake thing really.

I'd like to note that the text is MUCH easier to read when you view the image at full size. I know that when it's shrunk in the forum, it gets really blurry.

My issue isn't so much with the text's legibility as with the clutter it creates.

I could also get a shot of her face showing her rage, but I would like to keep it as a one-panel pic if I could.

I don't know the source material, but based on her body language, she was ready to strike. Even a "readied attack" counts under the "violent" aspect of the trope since its obvious that things could easily get bloody. Intent counts just as much as the actual action itself.

My biggest complaint is that the snake thing draws focus away from the elements of the picture that actually represent the trope. It's less than ideal.

Her snake stands out less in the manga version, I suppose.

Yes, her snake is less pronounced in the manga, but so are both the threat and the person she's protecting. It took looking at the anime picture for me to spot the former. The manga is just far too cluttered especially with all the speech bubbles.

I don't know the source material at it seems fine to me.

Here's one that shows the "violent" a bit better.

I like the anime one of One Piece better than the manga one. I don't think we need the text.

So I think that one qualifies.

I guess we could also include the manga one.

The one I found of Hungary qualifies. Here is the Hungary picture.

There was also one up thread of "Shive" that qualifies.

So I think we have three to four pictures that could work, even if we aren't that pleased by them. Should we keep looking for more pictures? Or should we throw them in a crowner and pick one?

What exactly is wrong with the Shive example?

The Hungary pic doesn't look protective. It looks like they're arguing.

[up]Hungary is grabbing Prussia's shirt in a fist while shielding Austria behind her back. How is that not demonstrating the trope?

[up][up] I don't understand the question. I said Shive qualifies, and suggested a crowner to pick one from the qualifying pictures.
