Not too hard for me to believe. Haruhi has basically disappeared entirely from the public consciousness. It just kind of fizzled out.
Yeah, true. And reading the actual stories, I think I can see why - there's a fine line between Genius Bonus and being insufferably complex for the sake of complexity, and I feel like Tanigawa trips over that line more often than he thinks.

It's been fun.Aw man were the novels really like that? Disappointing. I'd planned to get my fix reading those since the anime apparently is never coming back.
...maybe.
Inuyasha, Fairy Tail, Dragonball Super.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!The novels aren't too bad... sometimes... from what I remember of them, but in general, if you're coming into them off the anime, remember that you're going in without Sugita Tomokazu's charm to take the edge off.
It's been fun.The anime made fairly minimal changes to the novels it adapted, so they're really not that different from what you've seen... though aspects like Nagato taking over the story and Tanigawa not really knowing where he's going become more apparent as it goes on
I wonder how much of the dropoff of the original series was him starting The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan and then realizing "...Oh, shit, I actually just want to tell this story now".
I'm not actually sure how involved he was in writing the Yuki manga, but even if he wasn't, I could buy him finding it hard to continue after suffering ending drop (and yes, I know the last Suzumiya novel came out before the end of Yuki).
It's been fun.I think Tanigawa ended up giving up on the series because it was reaching the point where it needed to start providing answers... and he didn't have them
Part of the issue is I think he liked the Nagato ship more than Haruhi... and saw no practical way to DO it.
Yuri fanfiction writer! http://www.fanfiction.net/~shanejayellHonestly, I think ending with a Nagato ship would be a great way to manage it - it would fit nicely with both the arcs of Nagato chafing under her Authority, and Haruhi maturing enough to support Kyon's personal wishes as a close friend instead of clinging to him.
I will say, as Trope Overloaded as Kyon: Big Damn Hero was and as much of a crutch polyamorous relationships can be when handled shallowly, I always loved how imaginative it was and how brave it was to start with the Authority calling Kyon's bluff, and Kyon calling the wrath of God down upon them, and then just continue from there, and how brave in general that fic was.

It's been fun.I don't think a Nagato ship works. She's cute, she has a good relationship with Kyon and some decent chemistry as well, but I think it would kind of derail the story to focus on her like that.
That being said, I don't think the shipping in general was the reason Haruhi fell apart. Like Hylarn said, it was time to give answers that the author couldn't or wouldn't give. Either he didn't have them or the story was too firmly built on the idea that Haruhi Could Not Know.
Yeah, I don't think it works too well either. It especially doesn't work if you turn her into a standard moe character like in her own series. That kind of removes what people liked about her in the first place.
I do think the novels worked as far as they were written, though. Answers... Yeah, probably where the problem was. Or just losing interest and inspiration over time.
I don't think it's particularly "brave" to push your own ideas through in a fanfic. Lots of bad fanfics with bad authors do that, especially self-entitled authors, and they're not particularly "brave".
Check out my fanfiction! You mean Crispin Freeman.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!@Duck: Well, perhaps not, but it takes a certain spirit to take such an audacious idea and then run with it with such panache. I'd argue that it always bravery to write fic in any case, to say nothing of something so ambitious for a work that was, at the time, one of the most popular series on the Internet. I understand where you're coming from if you disagree, though.
^Both works!

It's been fun.Looks like there was an insert with the final volume of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan that shows Haruhi at age 27 or so◊.
It's been fun.Wonder if that'll be how the author solves the 'block?' Jump ahead 10 years. Yuki is with Kyon, Koizumi finally managed to ask Haruhi out... poor Mikuru is Christmas Cake.
Yuri fanfiction writer! http://www.fanfiction.net/~shanejayellFor the main continuity I really don't think you should expect anything but Haruhi/Kyon given that one glimpse of the future.
The spinoff seemed intended at least in part to throw Yuki/Kyon shippers a bone because it's extremely unlikely they'll get together in main continuity.
So they teased new characters for next season... and Haruhi is from them too...
(I know it's extremely unlikely. We can dream tho.)
Yuri fanfiction writer! http://www.fanfiction.net/~shanejayellUnlikely. Even allowing for Kyon's bouncing between timelines it doesn't really fall under the Isekai genre. (Though and inter-high tournament against Haruhi-chan.... comedy gold).
Just saw this and had to share it:
I've re-added Disappearance of Nagato Yuki to my bedtime anime queue. It's sandwiched between:
- Midori Days
- Angelic Layer
- Gunslinger Girl
- Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran
- Casshern Sins
- Devilman Crybaby
- Gravion
- Disappearance of Nagato Yuki
- Tsubasa Chronicle
- Wolf's Rain
- Familiar of Zero
In that order.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!We're getting a new book. Sadly it seems to consist of two previously released short stories and one new story.
Still, I am very surprised at the news.
And the new story seems to have a strong Tsuruya component.
Excellent /Mr Burns
^^Man, this made me want to watch Disappearance again. It's such a beautiful film. Honestly, I'd be fine calling it the end of the series... especially since anime-wise it is.
Hard to believe it's been so long since something new came out.
It's been fun.
