When did people here discover the series? I didn't discover it until 2013, though I had seen like screenshots and stuff—stuff I'm sure I saw before 2013 were the Kyon facepalm thing, the Kyon pointing a gun thing, the picture of Kyon with a critical expression on his face (as he asks Haruhi what she considers normal), and an image posted on wrongplanet.net that compared Asperger's syndrome (represented by Haruhi) and high-functioning autism (represented by a chibified Yuki). One of the other posters mentioned that Yuki looked so out of it it was like she was about to start drooling. I was otherwise oblivious to the series (as I am about more than 99.9% of the media out there).

In 2013, I was wiki-walking here on tvtropes.org when I came across it and looked at the characters page. I was intrigued, largely by Haruhi being "god" without knowing about it and the weirdness of Kuyo Suo. I had tried to find the anime adaptation of Kuyo Suo, but then learned the anime didn't go out that far. I think I did catch the Yuki-Ryoko fight briefly, though I didn't really understand the purpose of it. Nevertheless, I was surprised because Ryoko looked like she won and then suddenly got surprised. Despite this, I lost interest again.

Then in April 2015, I re-discovered the series and at that point I was hooked. I was disappointed to learn, however, that there may not be any more works released. I did kinda like the Nagato Yuki-chan spin-off, but most of the early episodes had like a million and one characters all crowding in on the main 3 (Yuki, Ryoko, and Kyon) and making sense of it became difficult. I liked the part where she dealt with the memory problems and the dissociation, and I thought the slice-of-life stuff afterward was more interesting thanks to how these characters were established. IMO, the creators should have put something dramatic like that Vanishment arc closer to the beginning so we can see how much Yuki, Ryoko, and Kyon care for each other. It would have made the slice-of-life stuff more meaningful, it my opinion.

Still, I look back and I see crud like Endless Eight and wonder how it was I was never aware of this stuff back then. It's like I was born on a farm.

I watched the first episode (well, episode 0) when it first aired in 2006. I did not know of the LN before that.

I saw some gifs of the Phoenix Wright thingy and needed to know where they came from.

This was around 2007 I think.

I think it was briefly after the first season had aired. Well, I knew about it before, but until I took the time to actually watch it...

When did people here discover the series?

Sometime between my freshman and sophmore year. I was on a now defunct anime site, and wanted to watch some generic, cutesy highschool anime just to say I'd done so. "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, that sounds ridiculously Japanese, I'll watch it." It was either this, or Lucky Star, and I wasn't fond of the chibi art style.

Lo and behold, I pick the one generic highschool anime that's trying not to be a generic highschool anime, deliberately pointing out its own tropes and having a unique plot (high schoolers forced to keep God in check, to this day I still don't know of any similar work)

I actually nearly stopped at Episode 0, thinking that the site had the episodes out of order. Fortunately, they listed them in "Kyon order", so the plot was delightfully, never-wrackingly non-linear. Its because of that strange approach that I went into Season 2. Which got even more confusing when it told stories between episodes from the first season.

When some of my classmates would later on about how cool Akame ga Kill was, I'd smirk like an asshole. "You haven't watched a good anime yet." I later watched Akame ga kill and shut my whore mouth.

I saw the trailer for Disappearance and fell deeply in love with classical music. To this day, the trailer mystifies me. Kyon's absolute terror at Asakura's return. Kyon bolting like a bat out of hell past a rushing train, the intensity on his face. For all that this anime was, I'd never seen a member of the SOS brigade look so terrified (Well, except Mikuru)

And to this day, it still captures me. It brings me back to an early morning in September, on the first day of my senior year when I'd just woken up, jittery, anxious. I had a few hours before I needed to leave, so I went to my usual anime hangout.

And it was there. The entire film, in English. It'd been put out there in subs months ago, but the dubbed version, I hadn't seen hide nor hair of it until that very moment. I laid down, curled up, and watched the entire thing before school.

That was a magical morning.

I read the first Haruhi light novel in 2004 when I was in Japan with my Japanese relatives. Barely understood it, since my Japanese skills were horrible back then. I've come a long way. FYI, Haruhi didn't become well-known at until the 2006 anime came out, before it was just another light novel sitting in Standard Bookstore.

I thought it was funny. A lot of anime comedy relies on "A WEIRD THING JUST HAPPENED!" "YEAH, THAT WAS WEIRD!" type dialog, which I understand is derived from Manzai routines, so to see episode 0 where most of the humor is either in awkward pauses or sarcastic narration seemed quite novel to me, and more in line with my own sense of humor. Later, I also appreciated the show's approach to its various sci-fi conceits, which were universally understated yet simultaneously treated with a strange gravitas. Normally you'd expect something like this to aim for "wacky" so that was also a nice touch.

I watched it way back umm probably about a year after it first aired. It really got me into Slice of Life animes. I was a huge victim of the endless teasing and hype for S2.

MOHS was the first anime TV show I watched and the one that served as my gateway into anime in general. I watched it in June of 2010, so it's coming up on six years ago (does time ever fly!). Before that I'd read a little about it on this site, which was the reason I tried watching it in the first place.

The more anime I watch, the more I realize just how unique MOHS really is. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else as their first show, not even to my past self...but hey, it did the trick.

Same for me. Give or take a couple of weeks. Friend showed it too me not too long after it aired (enough for me to catch up on my own) and I was hooked from episode 0. Haruhi standing up at the end of the screening and giving it such glowing approval gave me an instant "Who is this weirdo? I must know more!" reaction.

I read the light novels fan translated around 2007 in my second year of high school. Vaguely knew of the anime, but didn't check that out until many years later.

Then I got frustrated over how little of the material was carried over.

Then a similar process happened with Spice and Wolf, and I've not seen a good enough ln series since to deserve my attention in a nonironic fashion.

I was one of those guys desperately refreshing fan sites for translations of Surprise to come out chapter by chapter.

It was one of the first shows I watched online, probably around 2010. It captivated me from the start mostly for Haruhi. She is not a character, she is a force of nature. I also felt a deep attraction to Nagato, more than for any of Rei's clones for some reason. There was also something in the tone, at once very respectful but also subtly playful. And it was able to make grabbing a girl's breasts into a powerful character moment. It entranced me in a way few things ever have.

After that, the lack of direction damped my love of it and it was years before I finished the second season. And by "finished" I mean watched 3 of Endless Eight which is all you need. I got hold of some of the novels. I'll even say Nagato-chan has good moments, though not in the shipping that was its raison d'être.

It will always hold a place in my heart, despite some commendable efforts to break out.

Yasmin Perry,

I was looking at your website and saw the screenshot of Yuki Nagato having "a rare emotional moment" and it is striking. It's almost like you can see the human within. What you are seeing there is not Yuki Nagato the Humanoid Interface, but instead Yuki Nagato the Human, who is suffering.

As I explored the nature of the humanoid interfaces above, it became apparent that their stories really are sad. Yuki's story is tragic, and it's hard to see how it would end well for her, at least from the perspective of normal humans. What's notable about this series is that the sadness isn't in your face, but rather is lying just beneath the surface.

I guess Yuki can only hold out for a miracle, which for her is represented by snow, as she writes about in her fantasy horror stories.

It's really easy to see how Yuki's story will end well. Haruhi cares about Yuki therefore Yuki will have a happy ending. When you have a powerful Reality Warper who may or may not be the Creator-God of your world on your side things tend to work out eventually. There will definitely be problems along the way (Haruhi would get bored if everything around her was perfect) but she would never let any permanent harm come to her SOS brigade or any of its members (unless you count the mild psychological trauma she inflicts on Mikuru).

But happy from Yuki's perspective or Happy from Haruhi's? tongue

Haruhi wants Kyon, so her 'happy ending' for Yuki might not be anything Yuki wants.

Things probably won't end exactly the way Yuki wants but not the best ending is not the same as not a happy ending at all. Haruhi has made no effort to separate Yuki and Kyon and Yuki seems to be happy with the current state of her relationship with Kyon even if she would be happier with something else.

So, if they make season 3, which would probably have 14 episodes, this might be the number of episodes each arc will have:

Snow Mountain Syndrome: 2 episodes

Love at First Sight: 2

Where Did the Cat Go?: 1

The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina: 1

Editor in Chief Straight Ahead!: 2

Wandering Shadow: 1

The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya: 5

For broadcast order, it might be interesting if they broadcast it out of order like season 1, to help get people into the action and remind them of the good season. I suppose which they would put first would depend on their desired emphasis: If they're looking to go more in depth into Mikuru's character, then they might do Intrigues ep. 1 or Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina first. Intrigues pt. 1 may do better because it would wrap up Disappearance and help set the tone for the post-Disappearance stories. But you'd probably want to mix it up, because you may not want to start by showing the entirety of that big huge arc.

As for the Dissociation/Surprise arc, that can be put into a movie, whose title would probably just do as The Dissociation of Haruhi Suzumiya, which captures what happens pretty well. It's clear that post-Disappearance Haruhi builds up to Dissociation. But are people anticipating this like they anticipated Disappearance?

EDIT: I would also think at least the Editor in Chief pt. 1 should go early because it re-introduces us to Emiri Kimidori and reveals something about her character and introduces the awesome Student Council President.

I'd say if they want Season 3 to be a success, they'd need to make us care about moe-blob. I think if it's done well, that would be possible, and to have us actually care about her as a person, not just as a moe-blob, could make for an effective story.

Does anyone know why the hardcover edition of The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya is so ridiculously expensive? The cheapest used copy I can find on amazon is over $200. All of the other books the hardcover edition is reasonably priced (Melancholy is a little over $20 and the rest are cheaper) and the paperback version of Wavering is only a little over $13 new.

Assuming the TFEI are legit artificial humans who are hooked via a data link to a controller, I have an idea for why they come across as detached, sometimes having inappropriate emotional expressions. It is because they are having to attend to their "data sense" in addition to the other senses. The data sense often has more valuable information than the other senses, as it brings context-relevant data as well as communication from the Data Overmind directly into their mental processes including their field of awareness, and since the sense isn't a "physical" one where normal humans are concerned, there will be a tendency towards detachment from the physical world inhabited by normal humans. It's likely they must often concentrate to use their data abilities and control the input context of their data sense, which takes away their ability to focus on the physical world and all its goings-on, the smiles and the laughs and the anger and the sadness..
