I'm hardly a hater but can't say I agree. The movie was even more wretched than the first book, if possible. but hey, Christopher Paolini is doing what we all want to do: writing blatant shitty Wish Fulfillment Self Insert Fics and making loads money off of them.

Yes I liked Eragon. No, it's not derivative. Originality is overrated, folks. Really, I think people are just jealous because the dude was lucky enough to have parents with their own publishing company.

Originality is overrated.... How dare we want stories we haven't heard before!

And there are many, many more complaints than just 'It's unoriginal'. That's just the most obvious one.

Apart from the Holier Than Thou (ironically) Atheist Elves, I enjoyed the books so far. I refuse to see the film, however.

Or perhaps Eragon really is the poster-child for everything that can go wrong in fantasy fiction.

What?

Noooo Eragon is definitely not the worst fantasy novel ever.

Well, I guess Eye Of Argon is the worst, but at least it as recognized as being so. Eragon is still mediocre at best.

I like it, it might not be the best fantasy novel, but it is enjoyable. It doesn't involve 500 pages of a Hobbit walking through a boring valley. As such, I'm looking forward to the next book. Too bad it is still so long.

I think the books get bashed a lot more than they deserve, honestly. Cliche, yes. Unsympathetic characters, yes. Somewhat boring, yes (especially by the third book). But there's much worse out there. Some of Wheel of Time (to pick another well known series) is at least as bad. It was decent for a first time effort by a young author, and even clever on occasion.

[up]I disagree on Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, though. Tolkien is far beyond anything Paolini has accomplished.

Is there anywhere on tv tropes we can discuss this series without the haters jumping in to bash it?

[up] Tolkien is indeed way better than Paolini, but that is based on 4/6 of The Lord of the Rings and not on those two parts with the hobbits walking alone. I expect many of the Eragon is way weaker than The Lord of the Rings too have never read the original book.

You're Completely Missing The Point of The Lord Of The Rings if you're just after the Aragorn plotline. A book doesn't magically get bad just because the focus, tempo and atmosphere have shifted.

^^ This isn't so much hater-bashing as a consistent and up-to-date criticism. Or, in short, "no". Everything is subject to criticism, no matter what it is.

There is way too much critiscism here compared to conversations about other works. All I want is somewhere to discuss it without having to constantly defend it.

Then don't defend it and just discuss what you want to discuss. Enough people here like it that you'll have someone to speak with. It's just that a lot of the people who like it can also see its flaws.
