If Oscar Wilde had lived in our time, he would be a /b/tard.

Actually, scratch that. He does, and goes by Jethro Q Walrustitty.

A short history of German Idealism

Leibniz: Boy it sure does feel great to have invented calculus!

Newton: But I-

German people: SHUT UP

Leibniz: I should figure out how the universe works.

German people: Maybe you should do some empirical observation?

Leibniz: Don't be ridiculous. I'll just make up some logical rules and go from there.

later

Leibniz: OK, so everything is made up of tiny little particles called monads. Every monad contains a minature model of the entire universe. One monad(the mind) dominates over subordinate monads of the body. No monad ever interacts with another monad, but unfolds-

Kant: OK, this isn't going anywhere. Maybe the British have made some progress.

Hume: Really, we can't know anything.

Kant: Awakens from dogmatic slumber

later

Kant: I've spent years developing a coherent foundation for human knowledge! Hopefully, my name will be remembered as a hero of philosophy by future generations. Or Bertrand Russell will get pissed of at me for trying metaphysics. Either way.

Leibniz: Back to monadology!

Kant: No! Um, because we can't lay claim to knowledge of things like that. We're sticking to the stuff Newton was doing.

Jacobi: points at Kant Atheist! Fatalist! Spinozist! Nihilist!

German People: Hell is a nihilist?

Fichte: to Jacobi You're misinterpreting him. What he really meant was-something that Kant did not mean at all

Kant: Look, I appreciate the help, but-

Fichte: interrupting Kant There are two ways of looking at the world: Materialist and idealist. Idealism is what all the cool, smart people choose. You want to be cool, don't you?

The easily-led German people: We sure do!

Schelling:I have an idea for understanding the stuff Kant said we couldn't understand. The key is nature. No wait, it's art. No wait, it's-

Hegel: muscling Schelling aside Guess who just created the end-all system of knowledge and philosophy?

The German people: How does it work?

Hegel: The categories of Being as distinct from the notion manifest the shapes of consciousness in the self-understanding of the absolute farkel farkel blahbity balh. I need scissors 61!

Schopenhauer: I have an idea of how to continue from Kant! One you can actually understand!

The German people: Really?

Schopenhauer: The world is pointless and evil. You're all pathetic wretches in the depths of comforting illusions. The world is a vampire. Despite all my rage I'm still just a rat in a cage. WHY DIDN'T MOMMY LOVE ME?!

The German people: I think we'll stick with Hegel, thanks.

Hegel: Also, the Prussian state is kind of cool.

The Prussian State: Give that man the position of Chair Of Philosophy at the Berlin University!

A yet to be born Karl Popper: Fascist!

The American Transcendentalists: Tell me more about this "idealism".

The British soon-to-be Idealists: Tell me more about this "idealism".

Feuerbach, Marx, Stirner, and Nietzsche: Man, fuck idealism.

Yeah, Accelerando was pretty great, and so was the sequel that I always forget the name of and could look up in no time flat thanks to my metacortex.

I think that it's because he's not writing about science for the sake of science, or something... the way democracy works in a future of infinite clones at any time was really memorable.

Hmm...so, when you view something through a lens, the real image is usually upside down, and the virtual image is right-side up, right? So, technically, the real world is upside down, and a world where everything's how it's supposed to be is a virtual image. Now, somebody give me my Nobel Prize in Philosophy!
