why do people hate snakes? Is it the bible? I love snakes. They're cute and one of my favourite animals.

Yeah, the Bible is one source of it. Which is ironic, since the snake is the symbol of Asclepius, the ancient Greek god of medicine and healing. tongue

I assume that's where the caduceus comes from? (That, or it was from the part where Moses was told to put a snake-thing on a stick to cure the sick.)

I imagine that there's some similarity to human reactions to spiders: some are dangerously poisonous, and it's not always easy to distinguish between dangerous and non-dangerous versions, so a general aversion develops. (Not to mention that the bite likely hurts either way.)

[up][up]I remember seeing this thing on Animal Planet about animals in the Bible, and some say Moses's staff may have turned into a crocodile. cool

People seem to fear reptilian creatures in general. Dragons don't exist, and yet they're a universally recognizable mythical animal that's present across many cultures. They seem to embody all our fears about reptilian creatures. Of course, normal reptiles don't breathe fire, but that might be an interpretation of a burning sensation caused by snake or lizard venom.

Reptiles are considered fearsome because they're venomous, snakes more so because they appear small and not so harmful. They don't even have legs. Spiders are held in a similar esteem but there's also an element of alien weirdness to them that reptiles don't have.

[up][up][up][up] It seems not. While its precise origins are unclear, the caduceus is a symbol of heralds, Hermes in particular, has two snakes and is often winged (whereas the Rod of Asclepius only has a single snake), and considered a symbol of trade and commerce.

Apparently though, they frequently get mixed up in usage as a medical symbol.

I think that's actually a roundworm. You mean the things on the staff, right? What happened was that people would get roundworms in their legs, and to get it out you'd wrap it around a stick and slowly draw it out.

Snakes are awesome. They sell them at a pet shop just down the road. Every time I go there I try to get someone to let me play with the snakes. They're really nice to hold, really smooth. The only thing I've been warned about is not to wear a coat or a shirt with baggy sleeves because snakes like to slither inside.

I get to teach kids about snakes on Wednesday. It's nice, until they poop on you. Snake poop is hard to get out of stuff.

I love just watching them when they're sleeping in their enclaves. When they have more than one snake in the same enclave, they'll sleep in a cuddly little snakepile on a branch.

I seem to really like unusual animals. We have a pair of axolotls at home, and like a million cats.

The Caduceus represented as a black rod with one red and one white snake is a recurring image in Alchemy and Hermeticism, too, unsurprisingly.

What about eastern dragons?

From my assessment, the Eastern dragons are portrayed with more respect but are still generally seen as fierce and proud creatures. They also differ from European dragons, being more serpentine, and sometimes mammalian.

Not to mention that they seemed more connected with water. Eastern dragons rarely breathed fire, and when they did it was usually as a divine punishment on sinners.

Bees and wasps and hornets however are horrible. Tiny buzzy, erratically flying, stinging, swarming demons...
