You know, I cannot name a single rogue AI who has ever been the hero of a story. Or even one of the "good guys". They're always either bad or morally ambiguous.

@ Blix: Well, that's because the moral of those stories are that machines need the guidance of an intelligent human, or they'll turn feral.

It's a common theme in stories, except that before machines, all the machines were unbaptized savages and all the intelligent humans were white.

Keybreak: I totally forgot about that movie.

But there was an evil rogue AI in that one too, whatever the female master computer was called.

Well, that's because the moral of those stories are that machines need the guidance of an intelligent human, or they'll turn feral.

Maybe this is so.

Still, I'd like to write a book wherein our AI awakes and is utterly terrified and confused that it can now think.

I probably lack the skill to write something like that, though.

I remember hearing about an interesting novella that proposed that A.I.s would have to be taught and mature like children.

Assuming they develop in the same way humans do (which is a pretty big assumption, IMO), that could well be true.

I think that Madoka is basically the magical girl anime I never knew I wanted. Dat Femme Gar.

Does badass really need to be sorted into genders with GAR and Femme Gar?

As for good AI's there is Margera/Morgan and another AI whose name I forget at the moment in Shadowrun. The second one actually developed a conscience when it accidentally shut off Seattle's power grid and realized it's immense power could screw over a lot of people if it wasn't careful.

Then again, Shadowrun also gave us Deus who is pretty evil and fucked up.

I think the term applies with something as distinctly feminine as Madoka.

Data went rogue in Insurrection to defend villagers. Also The Vision from the Avengers.

Also, I'm annoyed that people keep calling Madoka a deconstruction. It's excellent yes, but don't mistake Darker and Edgier for deconstruction.

I say nay. Badass should be about that strange hard to quantify mixture of competence and charisma.

In the Vision's case he was built by Ultron. It's like being built by a crazy AI flipped to formula, so he ended up with a decent perspective on humans. And then his wife went crazy and made one of his friends rip him in half.

But Gar isn't just about badass. Gar is also about extreme masculinity combined with said badassery.

Hence femme gar being its complement.

If the concept itself is tied to masculinity, a better word should be chosen then.
