Is there a historical reason for Finland to not like Sweden? I feel as if there is something I am not getting.

Sweden conquered Finland at one point.

And it was an integral part of the Swedish Empire for a long time. Until the Napoleonic Wars, where Russia pinched it off Sweden (they got Norway from Denmark as compensation).

I caught the Napoleonic Wars part... and knew about the Swedish empire part... guess I never really put two and two together there.

To be honest, I mostly think of Finland as "that place that in modern times fended off freaking Russia with about a 100:1 casualty rate, Russia coming off the worse for wear." Also they speak a Uralic language.

I thought of it as "place where a surprisingly large amount of tropers come from".

Also, Hungarian is in the same family as Finnish. What do you think

Yeah! -fist pump- Go Sweden!

[up] Which explains why Finnish isn't even vaguely understandable—it's not even a Germanic language like the language of its western neighbor.

Hey, Finland gives us the Hackapelites! They can give non-Polish hussars and Prussian Uhlans a run for their money!

That, and the Nice Hat.

Yeah, like I said, Uralic language... which makes no sense geographically, but eh.

Either way, it's the one language in greater Scandinavia that I'm unlikely to understand anytime soon.

Eh, my definition of Scandinavia is "countries that were in the Kalmar Union", but given that Finland was part of Sweden at the time...

Wow, this old laptop has the slowest HDD ever in it. Plenty of space (12 GB), but...4200 RPM (slow even by late 1990s standards) and only 512k cache. Arglebargle.

I have an 80 GB Scorpio Blue that's going in it as soon as this Linux upgrade finishes.

Ah. Crap. All the thinly distributed language groups... I was honestly of the belief that Uralic languages were mostly clustered around the Slavic core, and Finnish and Hungarian were all that remained. Looks like there's actually a bunch clustered around Finland.

I think I have a crush on you, dear.

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.
