Here is a version of the story that isn't hidden behind a paywall account registration.

The second part of the topic title is misleading, though - there's no early indications that Activision is the leading bidder for Harmonix, or that they're bidding at all. You're better than to put crap like that in a topic title, JAF.

Is this that surprising? Music games are becoming less popular because the fad is starting to pass, so Harmonix's parent company thinks selling them would be a good idea. And it's good, since I'm kind of sick of the genre being totally dominated by Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and the focus on selling music rather than on actual gameplay. Not that this would necessarily change that.

I fixed that in my original post. But linking to a site that requires you to register for an account, paid or not, just to view the article is annoying. Not all of us here have an account at gamesindustry.biz.

You need to have an account to read the story in the link you posted. It doesn't actually cost money, but nobody is going to get an account just to read one article.

EDIT: Ninjad.

And, you know, Amplitude, Frequency, Guitar Hero 2 and Rock Band 2/3. Really, even if this somehow meant that Harmonix is going to stop making new games, it's not like it's a big loss. It'd just be more Rock Band sequels and that one Kinect game.

You do know there's a reason Harmonix fled Activision, right?

Why would Activision re-buy one of their companies? The value would be different by then.

^^ Because their contract with RedOctane was up, so they no longer had any obligation to make any more Guitar Hero games, and Activision would probably rather have its own developers make the games anyway?

There was nothing in either the gamasutra article or the first paragraph of the other article suggesting that Activision was going to buy them up.

*facepalm*

This is how dumb rumors get started.

Try telling us, with evidence beyond gut instinct, why Activision might be buying Harmonix. As Viacom hasn't even revealed who they're talking to that would be interested in buying Harmonix, no one can really say beyond speculation. My gut instinct tells me that EA, having helped publish Rock Band for so long, would be more likely.

Yeah. There's not really any good reason that Activision would buy Harmonix (remember that they already have plenty of developers of their own, and they don't really need another), and if anyone is going to, EA seems to be much more likely.

An investment firm that seems content to let them do their thing, should everyone's words in the article be taken at face value (hahahaha good one).

Still, better than one of the giant corrupt corporations, as the thread title oddly suggested.
