Porcupine Tree has a good drummer. Dream Theater has a good drummer. Do they count?
http://www.last.fm/user/BlueGhost60^ Well, in the OP it mentions something about prog metal * not being allowed... a rule that I screw, because I have money. So, yes, they count.
And on that note: I'm going to mention Tool's drummer as well, which is something I'm not allowed to do because gushing about Tool makes you a pseudo-intellectual emo stoner slob who hates every band except Tool. And although I think Mastodon are quite overrated, their drummer is really good, so I'll throw them in as well.

last.fm | RYMWell if we're going with great prog metal drummers, there's always Blake Richardson
"I could eat a knob at night" - Karl PilkingtonBlake Richardson is friggin' beast.
I'll second PT, Tool and Mastodon, although PT are the only non-metal ones. Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater is pretty much my favourite drummer ever, but again, TEH METULZ (although a significant amount of Dream Theater's repertoire isn't that heavy, especially if you check out Images and Words, Metropolis Pt 2 or Octavarium).
WISE FWOM YOUW GWAVES
So, I listened to Fragile and Close to the Edge since the last time I posted. Both of them were good, but not really what I was looking for in a prog band. Which is weird...
I noticed that our Progressive Rock page splits the two into "Symphonic Prog" and "Crossover Prog", and I think I'm more a fan of the latter than the former.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat! What exactly is the difference between crossover prog and symphonic prog? Is it just song lengths, or is there more to it?
And isn't having a unified sound (like, more classical or more poppy) kinda antithetical to the concept of progressive rock?

@Bobby G: Since a unified sound is all a genre is, I'm gonna say no.

Can anyone recommend any bands that sound similar to The Mars Volta?
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat! At The Drive-in and Sparta are done by pretty much the same people. At the Drive-in is really good, but I haven't listened to Sparta yet.
"I could eat a knob at night" - Karl PilkingtonYou could try starting with the classic ones, like Yes, King Crimson, Rush, etc.
Although, my knowledge of prog outside of those is extremely limited.

You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!^^^Yeah, probably. Although I'm not really one to say anything about post-hardcore considering I know nothing about it.
If you're looking for something more proggy, then there's always Tool and all of Maynard's little projects(A Perfect Circle, Puscifier).
"I could eat a knob at night" - Karl PilkingtonEntry level prog? Porcupine Tree, Rush, Pink Floyd, King Crimson.
http://www.last.fm/user/BlueGhost60I NECRO THIS THREAD.
So I found an album by an (allegedly, I'm not too good with these things) Prog Band called FAFOOT.
It's here,
for free.
Thoughts anyone?
