Grad school's really increased how much I drink, I'm still never drunk but I find myself pouring a drink or so a night when reading time comes. Compared to a year ago when I drank the occasional glass of wine with dinner or beer.
Obligatory self promotion: http://unemployedacademic.tumblr.com/10 points if you can guess what this is.

I just had espresso with C D C in.

If I were to write some of the strange things that come under my eyes they would not be believed. ~Cora M. Strayer~Reviving thread! Just to say that Harviestoun
Bitter & Twisted is a freakin' awesome blonde beer, that I recommend all ale drinkers should try if they can get their hands on it. That is all.
Ooh, no I haven't. I shall have to seek out a bottle of this stuff, sounds good. Is it a Porter by any chance?
Listen to Music with Tropers at The Troper Turntable!Eeeeeexcellent. This is clearly a thing that I have to find and try.
In other news, tonight I have had 6 pints, 2 single Amarettos and a glass of Port. Tomorrow will be interesting, and so will my bank statement.
Listen to Music with Tropers at The Troper Turntable!Okay, everyone! List your favorite drinks (and what goes in them)!
For me...
- Boilermaker: A classic, it's also been called a "Depth Charge" or "Car Bomb" in my hearing.
- Ingredients: 1 pint of beer, 1 shot of whiskey. Take the shot of whiskey and drop it -glass and all- into the pint. Down both. The ringing sound of the shot glass hitting the bottom of the pint glass announces when its time for another round.
- Rusty Nail: Another cornerstone of manly drinking, this awesome concoction was introduced to me at the bar I used to work at.
- ''Ingredients: in a rocks glass with ice, pour 1 part Drambuie to 2 parts whiskey (classic is Chivas Regal, but I've had better luck with a quality bourbon). Drink. Feel manly.
- Tampico Trauma: Because any drink named after a Jimmy Buffett album has to be awesome.
- ''Ingredients: in a glass, mix cheap tequila (Pancho Villa is best) and Tampico brand fake orange juice.
- Prairie Fire: It works just like a tequila shot, except you add a hefty dash of Tobasco sauce to the bottom of the shot glass before pouring in the tequila. Truly choice.
And, drinks I've invented:
- Screaming Death Wish: Pour equal parts Southern Comfort and 151 into a glass. Mix with an equal amount of Dr.Pepper, then add a dash of Amaretto.
- Baelfire: Fill a shot glass 3/4 full with Midori liqueur. Layer a quarter of absinthe on top, light it on fire and drink it (remembering to ''blow it out first''.)
I'm sure there are more, but I'm forgetting.
If I were to write some of the strange things that come under my eyes they would not be believed. ~Cora M. Strayer~A while back we hosted a cocktail party, asked people to bring specific bottles of spirits/liqueurs and printed off 9 A4 sheets of cocktail recipes. Best thing about it was that no one took anything they bought home with them afterwards, leaving us with a table of about 35 different bottles, and making us better stocked that most local bars. Here's a couple I enjoyed from that night (and subsequent ones
)
- French Connection: Amaretto + Brandy on ice in a snifter.
- Dirty Mother: Same but replace Amaretto with Kahlua, and serve in an Old Fashioned glass.
Other drinks: Talisker is probably my favourite Scotch Whisky at the moment, but that's liable to change at any moment. My favourite beers are Hobson's Brewery 'Postman's Knock', a fantastic ruby porter, and a honeyed beer I had once called Cotleigh 'Honey Buzzard', that I have failed to find ever since I first drank it about 3 years ago. The day I rediscover it will be a wonderful day.
Listen to Music with Tropers at The Troper Turntable! My favorite Scotch is still Springbank, preferably the 21-year-old, though the ten will do. It's the only Campbeltown malt and was for a long time the only readily available non chill-filtered scotch available, though there are more now (including bottlings by the Springbank distillery of barrels of other peoples' whiskies).
Second to that are the various Islay malts. After that, any of them will do.
A brighter future for a darker age.Okay, so tonight, for the first time in my life, I actually drank a Vodka that was worth drinking straight. It actually tasted of something! It was called Vikingfjord
(the guy who bought it did so purely based on its name), and it was delicious. Apparently it cost him the equivalent of £12 in the duty free shop at an airport in Oslo. Excellent stuff.
Also, Buffalo Trace Bourbon is amazing.

By the powers invested in me by tabloid-reading imbeciles, I pronounce you guilty of paedophilia!I drink too fast so the bottles end up empty and then recycled, I blame uni/body for not being lightweight.
