The events of the game just seemed to have no connection to events of the plot. Okay, so you're a pair of mercenaries fighting in Strangereal-WWII, and you're super awesome even though the country you work for sucks. You blow up a bunch of superweapons, and then... it turns out that there's some crazy anarchist conspiracy? And your partner's one of them? And they're going to blow up everything for some reason? And they've gotten access to a few more superweapons somewhere, so you have to air-joust your old wingman.
It just... I dunno, something about it just didn't mesh for me. 4, 5, and 6 seemed to be pretty believable wars, with shifting lines and legit military campaigns going on. In Zero, it's just like a bunch of stuff happening with little or no relationship between them.

Watched some pure gameplay video.
The person playing sucked but I'm afraid that the game is gonna basically constantly encourage you to use that close assault garbage.
I hope I can go 100% without it.

I can get behind things being close in for the sake of awesome, and though I don't see anything weird about a plane's "bleeding" oil after it's been shot to shit a bit, I'll gleefully accept that it's aircraft gorn. What worries me is the apparent control scheme. Maybe he was just using the novice controls, but I really liked having independent roll and yaw control. After getting used to that, having to Starfox my way around an F22 just won't feel right.
AC 6 had an option to switch between both types of roll/yaw controls, and labelled the starfoxesque one "for beginners". If the guy playing was a novice they might have switched that mode on for him.
I dont like the up close part because it makes the game look way too easy, like the entire game could possibly played as "Get close, initiate close assault, win a few QTE"
I know its optional (hopefully) but it rubs me the wrong way, and I'm afraid the game is going to push you into using it.
It felt like a Call Of Duty trailer for the first 60 seconds....horrible rap music included.
What were they thinking, ruining the awesome main theme with rap? =/
Apart from that, it seemed pretty good.
It still screamed "MODERN MILITARY SIMULATION JUST LIKE WHAT YOU SEE IN CALL OF DUTY! AWWW YEAH LOOK AT THOSE TROOPS DROPPING DOWN A HELICOPTER!"
Lets just hope the gameplay is still good.
God I cant believe the future of Ace Combat rests on this game...

What do you mean the future of Ace Combat rests on this game? They're also developing Ace Combat 3DS as well.
Demo is out on PSN and Gold Xbox Live.
For one, its impossible to start the level without using the CRA system. Then the game flies your jet through pre scripted sequences, encouraging you to shoot a jet just as it hits a stadium screen. Even if you take him down before so, another one spawns instantly and crashes right into it anyway....
Also, TGT Leaders are all but IMPOSSIBLE to shoot down WITHOUT CRA. They have unlimited flares and any missile will be diverted, even if you are right behind him. The game FORCES YOU to use the stupid CRA crap, which flies you through predetermined scripted sequences. You barely can control where you fly, and targeting is a bitch. The light green HUD is almost impossible to see during such fast sequences and in the sky.
You stall MUCH easier in this game before. High G has been removed. You can't make your high maneuver turns to get behind the enemy. Instead you wait for htem to lock on to you, hit the breaks, and match some arrow with a red arrow, then hit the Quick Time Buttons, the same as the CRA, and you instantly get behind the guy in the CRA mode for a pathetically easy kill.
You can accelerate during these sequences, and its encouraged. The closer you are, the better. Gun kills are now SCALED TO HOW CLOSE YOU ARE. Meaning gunkills are all but impossible now outside of CRA, especially since the gun reticule is gone, you can no longer lead targets. Also if you have your "meter" charged in CRA (charges faster the closer you are) you fire a powerful homing missile that is almost always going to hit.
Your health regenerates. Let me say this again. Your. Jet's. Health. Regenerates. And the more damage you take, guess what, its Call of Duty encroaching red outline time!
The tutorial level is pathetically easy. Enemy jets will politely group up into 4, perfect for your special weapon. And combined with the regenerating health, you could beat this level by smashing your head onto your controller.
The game IS pretty, but the camera moves so fast during the CRA that its all motion blurred away.
The helicopter level isn't bad. The controls are drastically different from the jets and Damn You, Muscle Memory! will waste you many missiles, or make you descend when trying to fire your guns.
Its mostly just a bunch of "Kill the guys hurting your allies before they kill them" affair escort missions. Nothing new in Ace Combat.
Barrel Rolling is your main way to avoid missiles, but you can also shoot down RP Gs as well.
All in all? A decent game. Absolutely horrendous ace combat. The game basically went "We'll take it from here champ, you just hold down the X and R1 button and sometimes press O, alright? OH PRESS TRIANGLE SOMETIMES!"
I felt like I was playing a Michael Bay movie, shitty camera and all.
I guess some people new to the series would enjoy that. But not me.
I'd love to discuss this more with others, instead of it just me bitching alone.

It's a tutorial mission so that's probably for the purpose of the tutorial, just like that HAWX training mission that locked you in Assitance-off mode even if you didn't want it. That being said, fi they do require you to use CRA in the rest of the final game.... 9_9.
If it sucks, you can call it the Close-Range Assault Pursuit, or CRAP.
I'll personally wait for another Strangereal game, thanks
That's not due to the above demo impression, but my general standing. I've been waiting for another continuation of the series, preferrably a setting set between 3 and 4 chronologically, since 3 is the roaring future
That is pretty lame that the jet repairs damage, and the enemy planes can use flares and chaff to dodge missiles. The CRA system sounds like all you have to do is hold down the gun button and the game does the rest.
@Glow: Theres no evidence showing that its only the tutorial. Now I can understand the very start of the tutorial forcing the CRA on you, which it does.
But the game goes out of its way to tell you that TGT Leads are extremely difficult to take out without CRA.
If you keep going without it the game will just keep going "USE THE CRA!!!!!"
Now why would a tutorial put so much emphasis on a system if it only applied mostly to the tutorial?
Plus, with the fact that guns are now completely useless outside of CRA (Scale to distance AND no more target leading with them) makes me believe they are pushing the CRA on you.
With Original controls, you do have to control your plane slightly in order to keep following the jet, but it still puts you on a predetermined path, rolling and moving for you. You just have to keep your reticule on the guy. Its extremely easy.
Is it the tutorial and probably on novice mode? Yeah, but a demo is meant to provide you with an impression of a game. And this impression stunk.

Awesome, The ZOE are returning from Ace Combat 2, and it looks like you can hire out Slash or Edge to be your wingman, just as you could in Ace Combat 2. So we know it will involve USEA and the Z.O.E. Maybe now we will find out what Z.O.E. actually stands for.
I wonder if this is just a remake/retcon of Ace Combat 2? That would be nice, having a new story to go by that better fits it into the Strangereal world.

What we really need is a remake of Ace Combat 3 that'll actually come stateside with its story and branching missions intact...
A remake/reintroduction of all three original playstation games would be a good idea, really. Build them to fit into the storyline that Ace Combat 2 and 3 kinda sorta started in a very confusing manner, but Ace Combat 4 set the standard for the rest of the series in terms of story and gameplay.

An ace combat on the DS? That's cool - although I'm not sure how it'd handle without a joystick. Hopefully not with gratuitous use of motion controls =/
@ Thorn: Judging by your review, I get the impression that the CRA is available with both the normal controls (like previous A Cs and HAWX - separate roll and pitch) and the starfox-style automatic-bank system. Is that correct? Because I read somewhere else that CRA couldn't be used with normal controls, and that made me a sad panda - seeing as it looks like you need to use it to get anywhere and i hate the starfox-style controls.

They do have a 2nd stick add-on, not that they couldn't just use the same control scheme as Ace Combat 1 and 2, where the directional pad was required to fly.
I haven't gotten a chance to play the demo yet, but I watched the gameplay video, and I'm looking forward to it. Project Aces experimented with something very similar to the Close Range Assault system in The Sky Crawlers Innocent Aces, and that was a fun little game (if a bit lackluster overall).

I always thought of it as meaning "It's an okay game, but it doesn't meet the quality standard set by the rest of the series".
Or more likely: "it doesn't match the game play styles of the rest of the series".
Because fans liked a series because of what it gave. You change it up completely and it ruins the whole point people became fans of the game.
I mean how do you think people would feel if Call of Duty or Halo turned into a golf simulator? But a REALLY good golf simulator.
I play Ace Combat to be a badass Ace Pilot who defies physics, while everyone thinks i'm a god. And I DO IT ALL MYSELF. I didn't NEED a cutscene or a QTE to fly into a fucking tunnel. I didn't need a fucking auto-chase system to take out the yellow squadron.
Maybe some people like just watching a game go "WOAH LOOK AT THAT HOW COOL IS THAT WISH YOU WERE ABLE TO DO THAT HUH?" but thats not what Ace Combat is about.
