I know that Stalker's guns at the very least are arm-mounted.

In any case, I simply see no reason to fuck with established mech tradition for a few Mohs points, to be honest with you.

I think we leave it as an aesthetic choice.

Stalkers and Invokes, for instance, have their cockpit in the head.

Wait, Invokes do too?

Gundam's cockpits are in the chest, I thought.

Handwave is easy, to borrow reasoning from Mass Effect; human pilots are more unpredictable, therefore more dangerous and difficult to counter.

Wait, Terminator had an answer for this actually.

I forgot.

No wait. I remember. Something about humans having ingenuity and gut instinct to guide them in ways even A.I.s couldn't replicate.

Also AI's aren't given control of weapons of mass destruction out of fear they'll turn on their creators.

[up][up]This is a variant of the reason I use in my personal scifi setting, though mecha and tanks there have AI assistance

Subverting it is the entirety of the plot of the first book.

Or you know, an enemy spy couldn't steal a Human's blue prints and then use a copy of them to predict every move every pilot of that Frame is going to make.

I dunno about the other options (Sen seems pretty damn unpredictable to me...) but Sat's sounds fine by me.

[up][up][up] I can't find the first book of that series in stores and I have sad. sad

Sat: Well, the Flame does at the very least.

Anyway

re A.I.s: Depends, do they have actual sentience or simulated sentience? That makes a big difference.

If it's the latter, even allegedly sentient AI that aren't truly sentient work in predictable patterns.

A.I. are definitely at sapient levels. However, it is true that unlike humans A.I. are unwilling to take unmeasured risks.

As for cockpits, most, if not all of them are in the chest. Arcon tends to have them open in the front, where FTC has them open up in the back.

The cockpit has complete field of vision monitors provided by camera feeds from various places on the body, the main feeds being from the head.

the Thunder line will have top-loading cockpits (through the head down the 'neck' linking) with the reactor in front of them and sensor gear behind them, between the pilot and enemy fire. Safety first!

Personally, I like the idea of an embedded reporter. My first impression upon hearing that is something like Ellet IN SPAAAAAAACE!
