... holy crap.

Badass Grandpa to the absolute max. Part of me hopes that Netero survives this, simply because he's too awesome to die. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure he's toast sad

Knew the King would end up completely uneffected though.

Forgive me for saying it, but I just don't find the King's current villain invincinbility as entertaining as Aizen's.

-*shrug*

Honestly, I'm just kind of waiting for this arc to be over. It had some good bits, but just doesn't hold up well against the earlier stuff. Once we get done with the Aliens pastiche, hopefully we'll go back to the more entertaining stuff.

And yeh, I suspect that the King's Villain Sue-ness being less entertaining than Aizen's is because Kingy is being set up for some kind of redemption thing, whereas Aizen is being set up for a sword through the head.

Netero is now very near the top of my list of favorite manga characters ever.

Chapter 298 is on One Manga. Talk about Reality Ensues! Netero just killed the King with a nuke!

Also:

Yes. Literally.

I'll be bloody pissed too, but you have to admit, there is a fair chance that he'll survive. Badly injured, maybe, but not dead. Oh. God. Netero. I'm going to cry in the bathroom now.

Yeah, it's pretty f**king bizarre.

I think Yupi and Pufu sacrifice their lives to revive Meryem. I think.

EAT ME.

Great. Now Pouf and Yupi will die and we'll have a superpowered Meryem on our hands, with his own power and the powers of Pouf and Yupi combined. And Netero is DEAD. Let's see how Gon wriggles out of this one. Also, where are all the other hunters in the world? Surely there must be at least a few on the level of Gon and others who are available to help protect the world?

I gotta say, this was a disappointment. Yupi and Pufu were interesting, and they didn't break the power scale, and were pretty much forgiven by the good guys. Meryem is totally overpowered and the entire point of this attack is to kill him. Netero died in vain, and while this was a somewhat fitting end for Pufu, Yupi's character development was going in a rather different direction.

Plus, the levels of Narm have reached critical mass. Good lord, the homoerotic overtones. Good lord.

Netero didn't die in vain; he indirectly killed two of the three Royal Guards. I agree that Yupi was somewhat out of character, though. And yes, I noticed the Ho Yay as well. Pouf's behavior towards Meryem was always like that, but this really took in Up To Eleven, and as I just noted, Yupi didn't act like that before.

I'm not sure if the general weirdness of this chapter is enough that I can honestly say, "Togashi trolled my fandom". What do you guys think?

"I can no longer eat anything else"? I have to wonder if this is going to send Meryem on a cannibalistic rampage.

dammit netero dying to kill whatshisname king and then the king not dying is exactly what i didnt want to happen. well, at least he was visibly greatly injured rather than just shrugging it off, and it was considerably less in vain than other pointless sacrifices from other shows like dbz

and yeah thats exactly what i did but the first time it didnt work for some reason.

I enjoyed the earlier chapters more, mostly because the hunter organization, nen powers, and such intrigued me, but this arc is testing my patience. I hope the story picks up soon.

Yeah, I miss Chrollo Lucifer. He was powerful like a Big Bad should be, but not so powerful that it comes across as Only the Author Can Save Them Now (which Meryem is turning into).

Eh, I can see this being resolved by Meryem turning into a cannibal of his own kind and wiping out his entire race. Afterwards, he is no longer able to win in a conflict of him vs. world. There are probably other ways to handle it, but that's the one that seems most obvious to me.

You're right that it isn't really a case of Only the Author Can Save Them Now. Since my last post I've thought of another possible solution: Meleoron uses his Prefect Plan ability and a bomb of the same type Netero used to blow up Meryem. The only problem with this plan is that it involves Meleoron sacrificing himself.

"Yupi didn't act like that before."

Hmm. Yupi was pretty much always stupidly loyal to the king, and I feel that the death - the very near death of the king - sent him over the edge.

But really, drops of liquid Yupi dripping into the king's mouth? Really, Togashi, I thought you were more subtle than that.

...then again, this the guy who created Hisoka.

I'm really disappointed that two interesting characters are going to die, and the king is getting even more overpowered than he already is. But maybe that's the point. As someone mentioned, extinction of the chimera ant race due to cannibalism is very likely here. I predict some sort of self-destruction down the road.

Prediction for next chapter: King finishes off Yupi and Pouf, and goes to find Pitou for dessert. Which means Gon and Komugi.

...holy crap Komugi. I can totally see him finding her utterly delicious as well. OH NO.

Y'know, there's something that a lot of us are forgetting, but that I seriously doubt that Togashi has. That nuke... radiation galore, anyone? They're at ground zero a matter of minutes after the thing went off. Part of me is wondering if the whole 'heal the king' bit isn't hallucinations brought on by advanced radiation sickness.

Even if they're not hallucinating... the chimera ant genome isn't that stable to start with; the ones exposed to that nuke are probably going to be mutated to hell and gone before a week's out.

Admittedly, a cannibal rampage by the king would be rather poetic justice, especially if he takes one taste of human, goes 'blech', finishes off his own kind, then crawls away into the undergrowth to starve.
