Is it just me or does anyone also find it a little strange how anime, despite having less detail to show than live action, is constantly demanded to be on the bleeding edge of video quality?
I've recently been lectured for using VLC, which apparently is 'the shit', after complaining about strange green artifacts ruining my videos. I was then summarily directed to install and twiddle with Media Player Classic Home Cinema and various decoder packages and god knows what else just to be able to watch anime encoded with something called Hi10p which supposedly cuts file sizes (I know, I can hardly believe it too) and makes the colours look nicer, as if I could tell the difference (720p and 1080p look exactly the same to me, so...).

Best thing to do is to install CCCP or K-Lite codec and media player classic that comes with it and winnar.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Well... thanks. The matter of fact is that I've already been forced to mess with various things like Haali Media Splitter, LAV video and audio decoders and madVR, so it doesn't matter anymore.
I just find it a little strange that extreme quality is also demanded of anime since it's, you know, animation. For live action TV, it's a never-ending marathon to match the unmatchable detail of real life so it is at least understandable.
Upscaling low resolution videos seems to work better on live action than animation in my experience, for whatever reason(could just be less noticable - real people are kinda fuzzy anyway). Either way, I can definitely understand wanting to cut filesize(though it's odd VLC would be giving you fits with 10-bit encoding - their x264 is one of the few things that supports it).
Yeah, unwritten rule number one: follow all the unwritten procedures. - CamacanYeah I really dont care about quality too much Color clarity is the only thing that really matters IMO. (which varies greatly from anime to anime)
In fact I usually convert my animes to PSP format 480 x 272 and watch it on my psp anywhere.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!My first time watching KNK and I see this:
This is gonna be a strange trip. I can just feel it.
And Kalafina does the intro theme?
That
Most videos lower than 720-480p have some annoying pixellation, color banding, and other shit like that. I don't think it's "obssesive" to not want shit like that in an anime.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!^^^ Yuki Kajiura is the composer for Kara No Kyoukai, so...

Yeah, I usually convert mine to PSP too.
On that note, Raso, what program do you use to convert vids into PSP? Sometimes, I can't find what I want off of at Anime 4 PSP and PSPVC is buggy.
X Vid 4 PSP with K-Lite codec installed (updated recently to support that 10 bit stuff) it will convert to nearly any format iPhone, PS 3, PSP, DS etc. it's easy to que up a bunch in a row too as well (Did all the Pretty Cure series recently and it didn't take long at all)
And it has a one button click to set how much memory it takes up while running... on the mid setting I can play World Of Warcraft or watch another video while converting and my comp sucks.
Yeah I convert anything I can't find on Anime 4 PSP.

WAIT! You can play video in a DS???
DSI and 3DS I think, I was just rambling off the formats... It says "DPG Nintendo DS format" on the convert to options. (I only own one of the small ones so I can't try it out.)
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!...... If I could Raso, I'd suck you.

Interesting thing is, now that I remember it, there are rewritten version and those are divided in three volumes. I guess the one he downloaded was that version.
