Dumb things you used to believe as a kid

I didn't know what the words were for various things as a kid. It made some conversations very interesting. I genuinely expected to be understood when I called a Sting Ray a "Hemyoom" although those closest to me seem to remember that "Bundabutts" were tater-tots.

I know I didn't understand it either when I was a kid, but I can't remember what I thought actually happened.

When I was 6, I thought looking directly at my shadow would be fatal.

I once believed that there was only one religion.

From about 1-8 or 9. I thought most people were gay and it was weird to be straight. Took time to realize I was gray though.

• "Gross", "victim", and "die/dead" were bad words.
• Vampire bats and emus were venomous. You can blame Zubat for the former and Pucca for the latter; one episode of that series was set in very stereotypical Australia, where everything except witchetty grubs was poisonous.
• How traffic lights worked: Those little cameras would watch the traffic and were connected to a computer in the base of the pole. This computer would change the light colors depending on what it "saw" via the cameras.

When I was a kid, I thought you weren't allowed to read whole books at the library without checking them out.

As for bookstores, though, it's more complicated, and I can understand why.

So that's why the book store owners in Nethack get angry if you read a book.

That I would still be happy when I grew up.

I used to think that "why" was a swear word. I am not kidding.

It was because of this joke: Person A: I'm telling on you. Person B: Why? Person A: Because you said "Why"

Well I took that joke literally, so yeah.

I'm still very literal minded to this day and always will be :P

That if I didn't talk people wouldn't talk to me (people are oddly sociable when I don't want to be).

Because I had a very short attention span when I was younger, I made several misconceptions about shows and films I watched, including:

• Toy Story: Because I never caught Sid's name, I thought that he was the same person as Andy, who had suddenly started mistreating his toys.
• Monsters, Inc.: The movie ended with Mike and Sully trapped in the human world forever.
• Pokémon: The anime was the original source material and the games were based on it. Also, there was only one of each Pokémon species, and not just the Legendaries.

I just remembered one in time for Christmas too!

When I was little I thought that Christmas was "everyone's birthday" despite knowing the story of Jesus being born. Then I realised my mistake and laughed.

That's really sweet.

Putting this here rather than the Mondegreen thread, because I never heard the lyrics wrong, I just forgot what they were.

In "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", I used to think the line "Through the years, we all will be together, if the fates allow" was "we all will be forgotten."

It was because of the line "your troubles will be miles away." I assumed that since the singer wanted everyone to forget their worries, he would take comfort in later generations forgetting about him and his life. Kind of like a Death Seeker.

I can't remember how old I was when I thought of that, but I never realized how deep that was for younger me.

To be fair about monsters inc, the shredded door is very unstable so it could well break while they're through.

Speaking of mishearing Christmas song lyrics during youth, I used to think the lyric "reindeer pause" in Up on the Housetop was "reindeer paws", meaning that they could be heard on the roof, and it always confused me, because they have hooves, not paws.

Had it not been for Disney Sing-Along Songs, I might have still believed this one.

One time I thought Spaceball One looked like an alligator.

I can't remember if I mentioned this on here already, but when I was very little, I thought microwaves had a setting that could freeze food instead of warm them up, and that when set to this, the timer counted up instead of down. I was convinced that I had actually seen a microwave do that, but in hindsight, I think that me seeing that was just in a dream I had once.

I used to think Get Out of Jail Free Cards existed in real life.

I used to think Jim Crow laws were so named because they were made by a guy whose name was Jim Crow.

For a while when I was a kid, I thought Scarface and Carface were the same thing.
