I don't even know what I am looking at. Let alone that this is some sort of fate worst that death...

SPOILERS!!!

It's the main protagonist of the Harlan Ellison story, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, at the very end of the story. He's been reduced to a protoplasmic blob, literally has no mouth, and will never escape his fate, at least as far as the story goes.

The picture is the Trope Namer saying the page quote.

But, uh, yeah, that seems weak.

[up][up] Just that the image doesn't really carry that.

As far as the pic goes, if the speech bubble was a little clearer, it might work better, but as it is it's not all that good. Maybe a before pic showing the character as he was at the start of the story? Or possibly the same setup but with the main character from Johnny Got His Gun?

Anyone got a picture of that one guy from Twisted Metal Black? That boxer who got mutilated in a match, and the surgeon who operated on him lost a lot of money so hey sewed his eyes, nose, and mouth shut?

.... On second though, nevermind. That High Octane Nightmare Fuel right there.

[up] [up]I don't think they can, thought bubbles just hadn't really been used much then. The guy carrying Nemo says that he can't speak.

Nemo at one point says, "I wish I could speak," to which the man carrying him somehow responds, "Yes, I know."

Later, when Nemo begins to melt, he says that he can speak but just can't move.

[up]Actually, the "yes, I know" is probably in response to the man in the house asking if he knows where Nemo lives.

But it's a dream, no use making sense of it.

Just put a picture of the guy as he was before the transmutation side by side with the current one.

Like High Octane Nightmare Fuel, this page looks like it can become a competition to see which picture can one-up the current one in terms of scariness, and considering this trope is usually associated with HONF, I vote to just leave the current one.

You could take a pic from an issue of X-men where a guy on a bike bumps into Michail Rasputin during one of his worse moments and gets reality-warped into a nearby tree.

How about Han Solo frozen in carbonite?

...Which it turns out isn't listed as an example.

I was under the impression that Han Solo was unconscious the whole time, in which case it wouldn't be this trope.

Technically in hibernation, but it wouldn't fit the trope in either case.

I personally like the image, since it does look like the guy in the picture is incredibly depressed about being a blob.

I know. How about Gina Davis with her mouth literally bolted shut in Beetlejuice? She's trying to say his name 3 times and he bolts her mouth shut with a metal plate. For the rest of the scene she's trying everything she can to speak and scream.

But then people will think the trope's about people who want to talk but can't. This is about a Fate Worse than Death where the victim in question is trapped in a horrifying state for the rest of eternity.
