One look at the image, and you will agree. The text, especially, looks terrible in that size. Additionally, it's not really the best example, though I do admit a comic strip is a good way to show the trope.

I suggest we take the last three panels and arrange them vertically.

Is a subversion really a good idea for the trope image, though?

Not really, no. Hence "it's not really the best example".

If we're changing this image, which is a good idea, I suggest this.

It's a single frame, but it does show a character escaping from a situation, while mooks fire their weapons into a cloud of smoke he has left behind. Which seems to reflect the trope. Although it does have a watermark.

That's not bad. I wouldn't mind it.

The watermark is fairly easily cropped out.

where they are aiming is a bit ambiguous.

We can assume that they were aiming at him, hence why he was getting away.

I think he means it's ambiguous whether they're aiming at the cloud or at Batman's current position.

Belief or disbelief rests with you.

[up] Why does that matter?

edit: btw, they are aiming at Batman, not the cloud of smoke, can tell from the bullet trails in the high-res image.

[up] Smoke out is supposed to be a distraction, showing mooks shooting at batman instead of the smoke would be a subversion.

It's kind of hard to tell that it's from a smoke bomb.

For a moment, I almost thought Batman was using a jetpack or something.

Oh, well, I'm not sure the smoke-bomb-vanish ruse has to work to count as Smoke Out. But, okay, yes that weakens it. Also, I do see the jetpack possibility. Could be better.

Stick with the game Batman; it's one frame and shows it much better.

Is that The Cape? It's rather ugly.

The Batman one does look nicer, but I agree that it does look ambiguous.

Yes, it was Series. The Cape. Very ugly compared to what I though it was going to be.

I like that Batman shows the trope in one frame.

Stick with one-frame Batman. Gets it done clearly and concisely in one image, which is what we always want.

I dunno. It still kind of looks like a jetpack escape at first glance.

The thugs are shooting at the smoke. There's no kind of propulsion coming from Batman's feet, or back, or whatever.

The thug on the left looks like he's pointing his gun up, and there's some lines whizzing around Batman's head...
