I actually did the variation of finding out someone I knew and kinda liked had a ton in common with me friday.
Obligatory self promotion: http://unemployedacademic.tumblr.com/Not romantic, but a friend of mine from church (or, frenemy) had a boyfriend that they brought over. My first impression was "huge, overprotective guy".
Then we talked.
We. Share. A. Brain.
We managed to tick just about everybody off by singing Weird Al and The Ultimate Showdown Of Ultimat Destiny in the bus at about 6 in the morning. And we watch the same shows. (Constant Scrubs references and high-fives.).
And he has a cousin who, while more into video games than me, makes us a trio of similar minds.
I finally found a Heterosexual Life Partnet. (Sniff)
"Jesus is always the answer." - People who drift off in Sunday School.I think it is always nice to find someone with which one has interests in common. I have not had much luck with that though and even when I do meet people online or offline that have somewhat similar interests we typically have very different personalities. At the same time, people who have personalities that are similar to mine tend to not have the same interests I have so it does not really work out either way.
To be honest, it is probably better that way for both me and anyone with whom I might be friends *.

Finding someone with the same interest as you.
Bonus points if they're an attractive member of your preferred other gender.
