This week in the anime, the Shinigami arc ended. Nobunobu is now introduced, and as an ally of Takasugi. I think they gave him a pretty good and fitting voice.

As for the manga, I am looking forward to the next arc, though I'd also like a break from all the serious arcs. Just a little break, so we can spend time with the characters again, before the seriousness resumes.

Oh no, they changed the 2nd OP! Oh wait, they just swapped it with the ED. Phew.

They could've refrained from repeating the backstory every five minutes, but other than that the Reaper Arc was pretty good. I especially liked the climax with the pseudo-neck slashing and whatnot.

I take it the manga is having a streak of serious content over the more lighthearted stuff?

[up]

Boy is it ever. Which is kind of making us wonder how they'd go back to a comedic breather, especially since it killed off ANOTHER somewhat important character.

[up][up]We've had two very long serious arcs in a row, and the second just ended today, and it'll probably lead into the next serious arc. First arc lasted from chapter 502-524 (23 chapters), while the second lasted from 525-551 (27 chapters). With 50 chapters total and breaks on top of that, we've had over a year of just serious arcs.

[up]I'm not sure if it ever will. The arc even concluded with the Shinsengumi leaving Edo (temporarily), since they're now all rebels. I'm thinking Yoshiwara might be the next stop for a serious arc (even if it's had so many already). Mainly because Kamui being King of the Night acted as a deterrent to the other factions interested in it, and since he is no longer part of the Harusame, the other factions might become interested again. But I suppose anything goes.

[up]I think Chapter 552 looks like a return to form, even if it's still reeling from the aftereffects of the last arc. If not a return, then at least a breath of "taint" air.

It'll be interesting to see how Nobume and the Kiheitai will shake things up though.

The next arc in the manga will be IN SPACE!

The Yorozuya will need to gather all of Shouyo's disciples and that includes Takasugi. Also, Umibozu in the Harusame...

Chapter 554 is now out! The origins of the Tendoshu are explained, as is Utsuro's backstory. We also get a returning plot point: The Dragon's Vein, from all the way back in the Inugami arc.

Manga spoilers: The Tendoshu were formed to harness and use the Altana (which we know as the Dragon's Vein) on different planets. Said Altana on Earth is particularly powerful and is the reason Utsuro heals and cannot die. He's been leading the Naraku for 500 years, then disappeared and became Shoyo, then when he was killed he rose from the dead as Utsuro once again. Oh and Utsuro kills the Harusame Elders and takes control of the Harusame. Phew.

Today I was wondering when the anime was going to end, then the episode decided to take the time to state that it was going to have a third cour. Thanks, episode. [tup]

Overall thoughts for the first 26 episodes of Gintama 2015: It's a fun, episodic series that was really easy to get into and enjoy without prior knowledge of the series. That one serious arc with the Shinigami was cool, but the sudden tone shift made me feel like I tuned in to a completely different show. That said, I'd definitely be up for more arcs like that every once in a while.

The one thing that's keeping me from checking out the entire series (besides a lack of time) is the toilet humor. I'm not utterly repulsed by it per se, but most of the time it falls flat and I don't want to watch 200+ episodes/chapters of characters spontaneously puking or emitting other miscellaneous body fluids.

Favorite episode so far: The one where Gintoki and the Mayo guy were fighting over a lottery ticket.

Looking forward to Season 3, and I plan to pick up the manga from wherever the anime decides to leave off.

The Shogun Assassination Arc is about to come in Decemeber 2nd. I can't believe so early we will be getting to the biggest game changer adapted to anime form.

Oh.

I thought the epic trailer at the end of the last episode was supposed to be a gag.

I'm mildly hyped for this now.

The Shogun Assassination arc is great. I'm just annoyed they skipped a number of arcs to animate this one immediately.

Pardon the double-post, but two pieces of news. I did not translate these myself, but I am linking sources for others.

Apparently at Jump Festa, a letter from Sorachi was read aloud by one of the seiyuu. Gintama is entering its final chapter in 2016, but apparently there's still a lot of underplots and stories that aren't over. I am guessing this means the final serious arc will start in 2016 and possibly ending in 2017 with the current pace. However, Sorachi might still make a few shorter arcs after that.

The Love Potion arc, which got skipped in the anime along with several other arcs, will be animated as a two-part dvd. It will be bundled with reserved orders of Gintama manga volumes 65 (released in August) and 66 (released in November). No word on the other skipped arcs.

Hopefully the author takes his time with it and gives his readers the comedy relief that they deserve after all of the tense stuff that's been happening. How far from the Shogun Arc is the manga at the moment?

Finally, minus today's episode, I'm all caught up with the four or so episodes in the Shogun Arc.

Why are the action scenes so great? I wasn't expecting much from a gag series until the sword fight between that Yato guy and Sogo happened. If more scenes like that are gonna happen the consider me hyped!

[up]The manga is currently two arcs ahead. Starting with Shogun Assassination arc, it's been three serious arcs with no pause and the third is still going.

The action scenes and serious arcs are great because they're contrasted with the usual silliness of Gintama and its characters. Seeing these characters go serious and fight for real without becoming out of character is just a joy.

It also helps the combatants in Gintama are very straight forward about beating the enemy and fight very dirty. They will pull off all sorts of tactics and grab whatever they can to beat the enemy, especially if they're stronger than them. Fights also rarely drag out for too long.

Shogun Assassination arc has ended in the anime. Next week the Farewell Shinsengumi arc begins. Hope you anime-only watchers have had it fun with this arc, especially its ending.

Meanwhile in the manga: The Quirky Miniboss Squad has just been defeated and Takasugi has awoken (coincidentally the same week he goes into coma in the anime), saving Bansai from some of the Naraku.

Gintama's recent season has ended with the ending of the Farewell Shinsengumi Arc. However, it looks like the next season might be in the works as the manga is still going on and in middle of its third arc which its fourth will be the last.

So what we reveal on the recent chapters:

  • Oboro is the very first disciple of Shoyo, and along with Nobume are the one who knows the true origins about Utsuro, and the true death of Shoyo
  • Utsuro has a Multiple Personality (max to 7)
    • Among of the seven is Shoyo, Utsuro's good persona created by Utsuro, whom rebelled against him and fully take control his body. Until in the same time during Shoyo's execution inside Utsuro's body, Utsuro already killed all his six personality, with Shoyo is the last one to be extecuted, in the same time Gintoki was forced to execute his master. It actually Utsuro's set up for his return to the real world

Chapter 597 is now out. After Japan was invaded by the anti-Tendoshu forces in the previous chapter, the counter attack begins.

A noteworthy reappearance: After probably more than 500 chapters, Prince Hata is back in the manga.

Chapter 598 is out now, and the counter-attack in Kabukicho continues. Meanwhile in space, Nobunobu seems to have reformed somewhat, as Sakamoto and Katsura present him as the shogun to the Anti-Tendoshu Alliance.

Also, the first of the Love Potion Arc OV As will be out in two days on August 4. Second will be out in November.
