What exactly makes Makin a jackass? Sincere question. I wasn't even aware of homestuck.net until now.
Man, all I want to know is what happened to Hussie. Homestuck was one of the best, most interesting... things of it's day and I want to understand what compelled Hussie to burn it all down like that. It reminds me of how Douglas Adams had a breakdown and ended Hitchhiker's Guide with a Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies. Same energy. I hate seeing it happen to a work of art I really, truly believe in.
when he was taking the gigapause their father passed away, and also dealing with the game stuff, and trying to get the story rerailed so it would fit the ending they had commissioned. not to mention the general fanbase and how large it was. you could see it happen, even after the askbox closed, they would still pop up on the forums and answer questions on their formspring. but then that stopped. they opened a tumblr and barely used it and did like 2 more question and answer things and then stopped

Makin has a habit of purposefully trying to rile up the fanbase not just against Hussie but anyone involved with Homestuck in any official capacity. He doesn't just cause fandom drama, he actively encourages it. Case in point, for this latest incident, he focused more on Homestuck^2's lack of quality over the fact that Hussie lied about it's purpose, and then for some reason mocked the idea of sex positivity within the fandom (because one of Tumblr posts mentioned that the decrease in it was killing the fandom). It doesn't help the the reddit and its associated Discord server (especially the latter) are cesspools where people are yelling each other or saying the r-slur.
Hussie, on the other hand, I feel like from the start has been the real life version of Michael Scott. There is a level of them trying to be genuine and learn, but they're so stupid and oblivious that they make everything worse regardless (their racial and disability insensitivities, for one thing). They created a kickstarter for a videogame they weren't remotely ready to make, thus forcing the comic to delay itself and resulting in a lagging game production.
In other news, I have been messing around with some of the third party mods
for the Unofficial Homestuck Collection. The mod that adds Rex Duodecim Angelus to the story I think is an interesting one for first time readers (especially since it's placed at the point when Doc Scratch hijacks the narrative). And then there are the ones that add the Epilogues and the sequel (in theory because the links to both of those don't actually work).
But there is one mod that adds Doom, Heretic, and Hexen to Collection. How do you like that? You can use Homestuck to play Doom!

I'm not going to defend all of Hussie's choices, let alone his mistakes, but I just don't like the way the fandom's turned on him lately.
He's not "stupid," he's a very talented artist who bit off more than he could chew. Obviously the history of What Pumpkin is rife with high-profile fuckups, there are lots of examples of things he could and should have done better, but I just don't think we have near enough information to make judgments about him as a person. And his grievances with people in the company and/or fandom are none of my business.
To me, Hussie's just the guy who made my favorite comic.
we know for a fact that Hussie removed someone's credit in a own video game over a perceived slightnote , and encouraged the lawsuit against Sarah Z for making a factual video.
not to mention the myriad of other questionable/bad things that they've done over the years.
like. even if something is your favorite piece of media, refusing to recognize that the author might be a bad person and actively harmed people is the wrong way to look at things. it just means that they get to keep getting away with it.

"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeI do think characterizing Hussie as like the The Office guy is a bit much, though. But like, I think it's a super strained read to assume consistently good intentions and just not understanding the consequences? Hanlon's Razor is good a lot of the time but at a certain level I think it's more offensive to assume no malice.
I don't really personally care to build up much of a specific character judgement about Hussie because I don't know them, but if one is to do that, I don't think there's much value in building a cartoonish one. From the stuff it sounds like a mix of incompetence and malice; I don't think incompetence can excuse all of it.
Like, removing somebody's credit out of spite, I guess incompetence could partially cover ("I didn't realize this was more than symbolic") but it's still fundamentally a wrong thing to do. You don't need to know if a public figure is on the full balance of things a good or bad person; and you won't know, of course you can't know. But somebody who has repeatedly done harm to others, and mishandled if not abused power over others... people are going to turn on them. I know the internet can be frightfully mobbish about that sort of thing, but at least this thread doesn't seem to be unreasonably turning on Hussie. Just reasonably criticizing a person more and more as more and more bad stuff comes out.
I think it's fine to say "I don't really care if this person who made [thing I like] is a bad person because [thing] is still good" but I really, really, really would urge resisting the urge to have that turn into "[thing] is still good so I like the person who made it so that person is not bad" or "[thing] is still good, so I don't care that the creator is bad, so don't try to hold them to account". You can still like Homestuck and appreciate Hussie's skills as part of that; you can divorce your appraisal of his character from it. And it's healthy to do so.

Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask. Finally finding some time to watch the "what killed homestuck?" video.
I'm not through it yet, but:
- On the one hand it mentions that the fandom had already started dissolving by the time the ending came out, which I agree with
- On the other hand it looks like it's only focusing on the comic itself, whereas for me, a major cause of the fandom disinterest was the forum's destruction during a major pause. The forums, and forum adventures, were keeping the community together during pauses, at least from my perspective as a forum member who didn't produce contents other than suggestions for fanventures.
Edit: Ah, fan interaction is mentioned from 27:00 onwards.
Edit2: But the forum death isn't mentioned.
PS: Now I need to watch the ending vid again. In the end I agree with the vid author on this: The ending, if "incomplete", was good.

"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Looking through all of the old shit, I still don't understand why the forum was killed off. Don't even think there was a reason stated for it. Or maybe it was because of Demand Overload.
Is that so? Very sad. Never knew THAT, considering I've never been around enough to have been there.

Not even stars last forever.IIRC the forums crashed or were hacked, then the backups turned out not to work, and at that point the forum admins decided to let the forums stay dead rather than start them over from scratch (which to me, was the blunder that led to the community scattering).
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Obligatory advertisement for Stuck at Home Con 2023.
A Homestuck fan convention hosted on Discord (and VRChat, but I don't use it). So check it out I guess.
Okay, SAHCon has revealed some important information on the future of Homestuck, well in particular James Roach's panel
.
- Hiveswap Act 3 will happen, and it will happen soon. There have been screenshots of the game shown, and James Roach will release some music tracks for the game.
- There are multiple official projects being helmed, including one by James himself. As well, there are plans to increase official Homestuck merchandise.
- Homestuck 2.0 was meant to be something of a react series with new guest stars each episode. It never came out because the person heading it left What Pumpkin after three episodes were produced. The whole thing of Homestuck going to Hollywood was Dante Basco being Dante Basco.
So yeah.
the alpha and beta kids shirts are back in stock and topatoco implies it means something? maybe whatever james roach is working on that he said would be ready to announce soon? https://twitter.com/topatoco/status/1702777460817846599
ok so in meat rosebot and dirk are having a competition to make a new species to play sburb to keep their story going, and terezi is the judge of which species is best. meanwhile dave, roxy, cali, jade, and karkat are chasing after them in a slower ship. also candy aradia, teen jades corpse posessed by cali, and davebot are going after them as well.
in candy john is feeling depressed and roxy is working on a thing to make their universe relevant so they can escape being stuck there. which is presumably gonnna end up being june coming out.
