I'll put a few I think of as most epic:

1. Queen - The Show Must Go On (so much epic, it's amazing!)

2. Marty Friedman - Forbidden City

3. Buckethead - Final Wars

4. Tiamat - Gaia (and many others, especially from the album Wildhoney).

Some of those are fairly short (at least by the standards of the first song I listed), but still epic.

Current favourite: Iwasaki Taku being as epic as always in this song from Katanagatari OST.

General favourite: Kiseki no Umi by Sakamoto Maaya.

Some other favourites would be A Requiem For A Dream, Klendathu Drop, Hymn to Red October, Song of the Volga Boatmen, this metal remix of the Terminator theme song, the national anthem of Tajikistan and anything by Susumu Hirasawa and Rammstein.

Well, there is this one really epic song that I've been looking for for about a year now. Considering it's instrumental, I don't have any clue what it is, but it's in the video for "dogged" on this SAT Vocab Videos site:

http://www.vocabvideos.com/

Does anyone know what that song is?

Sticking with the VERY literal original definition, my favourite epic is Dream Theater's "In the Presence of Enemies." 25 minutes of totally amazing rock. ...though Genesis' "Supper's Ready" is a very, very close second. Very. ...VERY. Apocalypse in 9/8 never ceases to get me lost in a world of prog.

Now, using the average teenager's definition of "epic song," my favourite would probably be "The Glass Prison," Dream Theater. I do not consider thirteen minutes to be too long for a non-epic, by the way. >.> Though, on a related note, the Twelve-Step Suite might be a good contender for favourite epic. An hour of heavy prog. 8D I ain't religious (not to be confused with WELL I AIN'T SUPERSTITIOUS), but I do believe that's heaven for me.

..gah, I'm starting to sound like my dad's friend. Am I getting old already?

My favourite prog epic by far is another DT one - the forty-minute, glorious odyssey Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence.

Other favourites of mine are Nightwish epics like Ghost Love Score and The Poet And The Pendulum, Epica's Kingdom Of Heaven and The Divine Conspiracy, and above all, my favourite pieces of music ever - the Matrix Reloaded Suite, Neodammerung, Why, Mr Anderson? and Spirit Of The Universe, all by Don Davis (from the Matrix trilogy soundtracks, naturally).

I'm not sure if this qualifies as epic for most people, but I'd certainly define it as so. It's just the way the whole song builds up and up and up to the ending instrumental, I adore it.

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

Some unlikely but worthy picks, with notes:

  • Swans, "Feel Happiness" - More parts than a Swiss watch, all of which are awesome.
  • Deerhoof, "Come See the Duck" - Hyperhyperhyper HYPER!!!
  • The Dead C, "Head" - The most awesomely mangled series of half-riffs ever.
  • Earth, "Coda Maestoso In Fb Minor" - 9/4 slo-mo headbanging...
  • This Heat, "SPQR" - It's a freaking prog-punk protest anthem; of course it's epic!
  • Band Of Susans, "Hell Bent" - This song owns you. Especially the bass.
  • Sonic Youth, "Rain King" - Deny Steve Shelley's power and I feed you to Fenrir.
  • Animal Collective, "Banshee Beat" - And on the other side of epic, we have this one...
  • Mogwai, "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong" - Yay! Live medleys and vocoder!
  • Sufjan Stevens, "You Are The Blood" - Best cover ever. Even has jazz piano.

Had we ever finished it, one of my bandmates wrote a quasi-doom metal song with a bass part so excellent that it could easily rank here, at least in part.

AAL and Cloudkicker. Approved.

I'd like to add Letter Experiment and Racecar by Periphery, plus Devoid, Senjyu and Full Moon Night by Cyclamen to my favourite epic tunes.

More favorites of mine:

  • Coheed and Cambria - "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3"
  • DJ Shadow - "Stem/Long Stem (Transmission 1)"
  • Dream Theater - "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence"
  • Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "Static"
  • Kanye West - "Runaway (featuring Pusha T)"
  • Kanye West - "We Major (featuring Really Doe and Nas)"
  • The Mars Volta - "Day of the Baphomets"
  • The Mars Volta - "Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)"
  • OutKast - "B.O.B."
  • Yes - "Close To The Edge"

In case you didn't notice, I have a rather loose definition of "epic".
