Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls

Child in Time is awesome, but I wouldn't call it epic.

@Hydrall: I'm actually listening to "The Riddler" right now. I love Nightwish.grin

And yes, "Epic" is epic.

See The light — Father, This is for You

Kinda what happens if you put growled vocals to amazing keyboard, and let it run away with itself. Eargasmic.

A lot of stuff by Yes, like Close to the Edge and Roundabout (both already mentioned).

Also, Ravel's Bolero and Gerswhin's Rhapsody in Blue.

I'd have a harder time thinking of some shorter examples that would be the more... "awesome" or "thrilling" sort of epic.

Not actually serious.

Epic? As in that song on Rock Band?

Shoot, I wish I knew the Carmina Burana better! I've heard them and I know at least two of them are seriously epic. "O Fortuna", the first one, is a good example. My boyfriend and I once baked a cake to this soundtrack: http://video.google.com/videosearch?hl=en&q=o%20fortuna&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wv#

Helter Skelter by The Beatles - the four and a half minute version is epic already, the legendary 27-minute version? Even more.

Riddle of Steel, from Conan the Barbarian's OST. Though I like it mostly because it was featured on the trailer for Ocarina of Time

Aside from that... anything by nightwish. Even The Phantom of the Opera sounds epic when they sing it!

...besides the fact that most Queen songs take the cake, the most epic, epitty-epical epic song EVAR has to be Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler... I mean, c'mon, ninjas, swimmers, aliens(?), doves, fencers and football players all in one music video???? can't believe no one posted yet...

...maybe I should take this post over to the cheesy 80's music video thread...

"Ozar Midrashim" from the Soul Reaver OST. 'nuff said. Also, "Gauntlet", "Fight Unlimited" and "Groeder's Anthem" from the new Bionic Commando should suffice.

" Epic is, indeed, epic. I thank Rock Band for introducing me to it. "

Oh man, has that started happening? I am getting OLD.

To get back on topic...

  • Echoes, Atom Heart Mother, One Of These Days - all Pink Floyd. The last one gets in because of the epicness of the riffage and the accompanying light show.
  • Who Are You - the Who. (It has screaming. It must be an epic.)
  • A Night on Bare Mountain - Mussorsky.
  • The Box - Orbital. Actually quite a lot of other Orbital.
And three from various Matrix films:
  • Mona Lisa Overdrive - Juno Reactor
  • Furious Angels instrumental - Rob D / Rob Dougan / Fluke
  • Wake Up - RATM

The Ballad of Sweeney Todd. This must be an awesome musical to see live...

For a happier sort of epic the Dragon Quest theme as heard in Dragon Quest 8. It makes grinding for moneys to buy stuff seem so epic...
