(x3) I remember as a kid, I imagined a Dugtrio evolution being a giant, Diglett-shaped golem coming out of the ground with a bunch of other Diglett and Dugtrio poking out of holes all over its body.
Nowadays, though, I think if Dugtrio got an evo, it should be a similar concept, but with a floating chunk of earth that just levitates due to some raw, unseen power hidden within the mon's core. Call it Digdonic (dig + tectonic, like the tectonic plates), and as is tradition for cross-gen evolutions, bring its speed down so its other stats can get pumped up. Although in Dugtrio's case, I think it actually needs its stats pumped up and rounded out.
And for a bonus, if Wiglett/Wugtrio got the same treatment, turn it into a flying coral reef with a bubble of water perpetually flowing around it like a planetoid. Wigbyssal (wiggle + abyssal), perhaps?
Reminds me of this Tumblr post
defending Gen 1 designs because back then, the philosophy was "what if typical RPG enemies could fight for you?", but even they don't like Dugtrio:
I've got to wonder what was going through Game Freak's heads when they designed Dugtrio, but they probably don't remember.
Though Dugtrio's stats are honestly solid enough that it doesn't really need an evolution.
I am down for more regional variants though.
Edit:
If an evolution is made, I imagine it would still preserve the gag of never seeing the Pokemon's body.

Disgusted, but not surprised"Solid enough"? It has a stat total of 425 (NOW, after the stat boost in gen VII; it used to be at 405). Chimecho used to have that stat total before getting a buff that put it at the same stat total as Banette, Durknoir, Golbat or Primeape.
Dugtrio is the kind of stuff that should be evolving, not Bisharp, or Ursaring, or Rhydon, or fucking Porygon 2.

Giacomo down! The party wagon put Masaru the Lucario to sleep (idk how, I wasn't paying attention at the time it happened, I just looked from my laptop to my TV and my 25 IQ Lucario was snoozing) and Hong the Makuhita got knocked out so Yun the Meditite landed the final blow! I think I know who I'm picking as my successor for my next LAL playthrough

They ain't doing Megas anymore.
Besides evolution is power, and Kingambit is all about that power.
Unlike Megas, Kingambit is here to stay.

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"the megas were simply too big!

Megas were great as design concept but in reality they proved to be nightmares for game design. VGC in 6th and 7th gen only left room for the top cream of the crop to get any serious play, while gen 7 proved dealing with both megas and 7 moves at once was a minefield of mindgames to either opponent. Z moves were made so that ANY pokemon could use them, and that philosphy is a hard counter to megas. Notice how since gen 6, every new mechanic can be used by any pokemon (save for gigantimax but even then Dynamax exists) and has led to much more creative and flexible teambuilding.

Reminds me of someone who's drawn realistic fanart of Gen 1's Bug-types, fish, and plant* Pokémon, depicting them like specimens in an encyclopedia.
\* I say "plant" and not Grass-type because it didn't have all the Grass-types, just the ones that were "just" plants instead of plant + animal.

My idea for a Dugtrio evolution is pretty dumb. Basically, it would be a humongous Diglett mech where the 'arms' are Diglett heads and the body is a huge clump of soil with roots at the bottom. It would become a Ground/Grass type where good chunks of its speed would be transferred to its defenses.
The legend has returned.

The way I've seen it with fanmade evolutions, it could involve either adding even more heads, making the evolution fully visible (without a portion hidden underground, although I doubt Game Freak would go that way seeing how they always tease) or making one head much bigger and more dominant.
That said, knowing Dundunsparce, Game Freak could go an even different way.
