Yeah. I'll be leading with Alakazam, and using Dragonite as backup.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/lb_i.php?lb_id=13239183440B34964700 Alfric's Fire Emblem Liveblog Encyclopedia!Indeed, and I just bought the power bracer for when I start ev training my pokemon correctly.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/lb_i.php?lb_id=13239183440B34964700 Alfric's Fire Emblem Liveblog Encyclopedia!Even with the surfing Hoenn was still fun. It wasn't so much a bother considering how much faster you surfed compared to the older games, which was partly why surfing was so annoying in the first place. I wouldn't call it Xen syndrome either since the game's story actually got more coherent at that point. And diving was really cool. Hoenn had some amazing music as well.
But that has nothing to do with the pokemon themselves, which is kinda the point being brought up. I like 3rd gen over the others save for 5th myself. The designs were more exotic looking and imaginative. Though Johto has its share of weirdos. I still don't understand Wobbuffet's design. Amusingly enough there's actually an enemy in Zelda Oracle of Seasons that looks like Wobbuffet and even reflects your strikes on you.
Anyway yeah Blaziken, Ludicolo and Swalot aren't going to cut it I'm afraid. None of them are bad but you'll probably want someone else. The game does spike in difficulty towards the end.

I found Tentacruel better than Ludicolo in-game TBH. He's actually quite good against the elite 4 with an ice move, due to his high special defense and speed. He can nearly take out Drake's team singlehandedly, save for that bastard Kingdra. Altaria has earthquake but her atttack is so garbage she probably won't kill you with it before you can kill her.
Ludicolo can probably do well against lance too but he's not as fast meaning he'll probably have to be leveled up more. But he's great for Wallace.
Also remember hail does not guarantee blizzard will hit in R/S/E.

I remember I went through all of Ruby with just my Swampert. And Fire Red with Blastoise. It wasn't until Diamond that I raised others, and even then of the 3 I had during the main game Empoleon was a good 10 levels above the others.
In Heart Gold, I raised a balanced team, keeping their levels in the same area and totalling 5 members before defeating Lance. Now my teams don't include any of the original 5, though.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! In my very first Sapphire playthrough, my first E4 team had only 3 strong Pokemon: Swampet, Kyogre and Pikachu. I was still a Poken00b back then, so I think it's forgivable.
I never had teams of 1 or 2 pokemon, but I used to have pokemon with 4 moves of its STAB type, since I always thought the moves would need a backup. My original Red had a Charizard with Fire Spin, Flamethrower, Fire Blast and Ember, iirc.
Currently, I'm also ev training a fresh Bagon in speed and then attack. Hopefully this time I'll do it right.

@Xiphon: A while ago, apparently. I'd suggest visiting a Move Relearner.
