No, the point of that joke was definitely "haha, their relationship is gay!". Krillin made similar comments, and it's definitely not the last time they did the "haha, this thing/person is gay!" bit before thankfully dropping it.
Anyway, I don't think the first season was bad, even though they have improved remarkably. I recently heard someone say something that encapsulates my feelings on subjects like this: don't underhype part of something to hype up the rest of it.
That happens so often and I never understand why.

For reference, they were talking about Avatar The Last Airbender, and how people apparently tend to go "It gets better" in regards to season 1. Something I wouldn't understand anyway, because to me, season 3 is the weakest of the original series. Weakest being relative, I still think the season is pretty great.

I actually don't have the problems with the finale many people do, but a lot of episodes feel like somewhat meandering Slice of Life. Good slice of life, but slice of life ,nonetheless, and at a time when it seems like they should have been moving away from it.

Yu Yu Abridged is a few years old by now. You'll find it funnier once you get to the Rescue Yukina
part. That said I love the old episodes for nostalgia if nothing else. It was the second abridged series I ever gave a chance.
Book 3 has some cool stuff like the prison break episode and Aang and Zuko learning how to Firebend from dragons.
The only episode of ATLA Book 3 I'll always skip is "The Ember Island Players". I know it's a fan favorite episode but I can't stand how meta it is (nothing against meta humor in general since I like it when handled well, but something about it rubs me wrong here), plus it's pure filler anyway.

When was the first episode of DBZ Abridged posted? I tried looking on You Tube but apparently they had to repost it in 2013, so it gives it that date, while Episode 2 still has the original date of July 9th, 2008.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?I'm on Episode 16, and suddenly it's got a really weird blue tint. I'm guessing it was shown at a convention or something?
Also, the jokes about the Blue Collar Comedy Tour in Episode 15 are really dated. Like, badly dated.
And Lani's narrator voice sounds like Piccolo.
And Episode 17 is blocked in my country because of some copyright thing from something called Ponycanyon.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Yeah, that happens a lot with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure too.
