Basically, fandom has attributed various superpowers to Tien's third eye because they want it to actually do something, but it's a mostly cosmetic feature. What few abilities it does confer upon him are benefits of having three eyes, and have nothing to do with the inferred mystical and/or spiritual properties one typically associates with a Third Eye.
My favorite "Tien's eye power" claim is that only Tien can master the Kikoho because it takes three eyes to see through the triangular lens he forms with his hands when firing it.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Ok then. Why the hell does he have three eyes then?
I mean, if it wasn't gonna be relevant in anyway, why did Toriyama give it to him outside of because Journey to the West had a dude with three eyes (it did have a dude with three eyes right?), because it seems like a waste to give someone something like that and now have it grant him some special abilities.
And this has been Handsome Rob's tradition bitch about a think I think is interesting not being focused on in Dragon Ball post.
One Strip! One Strip!I'm not sure if anyone in Journey to the West had three eyes (especially since Dragon Ball stopped having much of anything to do with it by that point) but I'd bet Toriyama did it because he thought it looked cool.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! Why is 10% of the population animal people? Why are there dinosaurs and hovercraft? The Dragon Ball Earth is weird, and the Earthlings living on it are just as weird. I see no problem here.
Wonder who the analogue for Buddha would have been if Toriyama kept the Journey to the west influence?
Watch SymphogearI still love the part of Battle of Gods where Beerus mentions wiping out the dinosaurs, my only problem with it is that nobody ever calls him on it.
I hope TFS does get to do Battle of Gods one day, just so they can point out how Beerus actually kinda sucks.
Bonus points if they work in the Dr. Slump thing where Arale went back in time and saved the dinosaurs by throwing the meteor back into space and made the moon.
Aka, Beerus vs. Arale round 1.
...Beerus using telekinesis to throw meteors is surprisingly compelling as a concept.

So I decided to check out Lanipator's original abridged series from before TFS, Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged, and Lani has some of the worst editing I've seen in an abridged series. About half of the time, the voice acting doesn't even match the scene. The characters will have their mouths closed and Lani will be talking, and the shots don't sync up right.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

Yeah, he has better eyesight than most - he could barely see Goku when he vanished while fighting Kuririn, commenting that the others wouldn't be able to see him at all. And Kuririn points out that Ten's eyesight is better than him when he first notices Goku flying through the air in the final parts of his fight with Piccolo.
It's just not some supernatural or mystical ability some fans think it is. And it's not long after that when they need to use ki sensing because eyesight can't keep up with the battles adequately enough.
