No, I can say that with certainty because all I said was that they focused on him over other opportunities. I didn't make say anything about what those opportunities or the outcomes would be, just that repeatedly returning to the same well means not doing something different.

Perhaps, but I don't really see anything inherently wrong with revisiting a part of the series that's a favorite among the audience. Unless you just never cared about that part of the series at all, in which case (shrug). Don't know what to tell you.

Techniques could make for an interesting list.

Think that'd make a boring list except for like 5 to 10 entries.

There's only so many variation of "Shooting beams/balls of energy" one can stomach before being bored.

I don't really agree with Tobias that Cell was somehow supposed to represent everything that Dragon Ball is or be the culmination of everything that's happened up to that point or whatever. Like he's made from the DNA of a bunch of characters but there's no greater meaning to it than a backstory to explain why he's so powerful, nor do I see any reason why there should be.

As a character

  • Who resurrects the Tenkaichi Budokai
  • Created by the Red Ribbon Army
  • Who is Piccolo
  • And Vegeta
  • And Frieza

Cell incorporates every arc of the show except Pilaf. This is what makes him a poignant adversary for Gohan to face when he steps up to surpass his father: because he embodies everything that Goku has done over the course of his life.

Cell is Goku's complete history boiled into a deadly casserole. To take up the torch from his father, Gohan's task was to eat that casserole.

It'd just be nice if that casserole was a little more interesting.

In that case, would the Androids be a more serious version of Pilaf and company?

Those aren't the only things a technique can do, nor does the possible list have to be Ki attacks only. Plus, it can be about things like fun factor

I mean. There is one other arc of the show that Cell is missing.

He doesn't have Garlic Jr. in there. tongue

If I made such a list, I think I'd have the candy beam fairly high. Probably would also have room for stuffblike Solar Flare and ki absorption.

There are a lot of techniques other than shooting ki. The kaioken is a technique. So is the Taiyoken. The Rogafufuken. Body Change. I think a best techniques list would be cool.

Personally, my favorite technique is the Hellzone Grenade. Piccolo weaponized missing. That's hilarious and awesome.

As a character

Who resurrects the Tenkaichi Budokai

He really doesn't. I mean, by that standard, me having a race with friends is me "resurrecting the Olympics" (Never mind that for the Tenkaichi Budokai to be resurrected, it'd need to have stopped, and it's a plot point that Mr. Satan won the last one). Let alone the fact that the cell games have fuck all to do with the Tenkaichi Budokai beyond "people fighting".

The Cell Games have as much to do with the Tenkaichi Budokai as the Androids do with the Red Ribbon Army. Which is to say, not much beyond a visual aesthetic and the characters name-dropping it.

But the effort for including the three Tournament arcs was still there. It's just shallow, because Cell is a shallow character.

Freeza's Death Beam is pretty cool too. I mean, it's pretty much weaponized finger guns.

My favorite technique is Roshi's lightning move (I'm not saying its name, all the English versions sound lame, and the Japanese version is impossible to remember).

[up][up][up] Yes! Of all the ki beams, Death Beam is my favorite. A simple, elegant, penetrating murder beam. It's basically a more powerful version of the Dodonpa.

Freeza's Death Beam is pretty cool too. I mean, it's pretty much weaponized finger guns.

Tao and Tien did it first with Dodon Ray, which does the exact same thing.

You keep disproving your own point. The Red Ribbon Army is only part of Cell's origin because Toriyama needed a suitable motivation for someone to send all these androids after Goku. Cell doesn't really have anything in common with Piccolo, Vegeta and Freeza besides being evil and enjoying fighting; it's just an explanation for how he could be so powerful and why he's some weird biological mostrosity rather than a cyborg. The only thing the Cell Games have in common with the Tenkaichi Budokai tournaments is that the fighting ring looks similar because that's what the audience and Toriyama are used to the fighting ring looking like. Cell is at no point, explicitly or implicitly, indicated to be some kind of symbol of all the previous arcs. If he ever was, these similarities would extend beyond the backstory and some superficial elements.

Nah, the Dodon Ray looks similar, but its application is still to burn the target over their whole surface area. The Death Beam is used to pierce the body, like a gunshot.

Eh, it's not like we don't have a trope for that.

As far as favorite techniques go... honestly, I've always liked the Wolf Fang Fist. True, it was never used in DBZ and rarely used in DB, but the first time Yamcha uses it on Goku is just marvelous. He channeled the spirit of a galloping wolf to deliver a ki-powered No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, capped off with a crushing blow that sent Goku flying through several pillars. You can't tell me that didn't look cool.

As an aside, it's a borderline Game-Breaker in DBZ Budokai's tournament mode. If you connect with it anywhere near the edge, you're pretty much guaranteed to get a ring out.

I rather like the Makankosappo / Special Beam Canon.

It's a longer charged death beam, but the drilling effect looks cool to me.

Kienzan / Destructo Disk (despite never being allowed to work) is there as well.

And of course, the Taiyoken / Solar Flare. One of the most useful attacks in the whole series, because most won't see it coming. While it has a very simple defence (close your eyes son) since you won't realize what it is until it's done with, you won't know that.

#3 is out

King Piccolo

They mentioned that the top 3 order actually could have gone anyway and consider the final three to be the best in general.
