It's implied that if not for the heart virus, Goku would still be stronger...like he always is. Its just the first time Vegeta can actually say he outpaced Goku...if just for a little while and on a technicality.

The God of Destruction Champa Saga had stakes. The Universe 6 tournament winner would get Universe 7's Earth and the Super Dragon Balls.

I think even Goku says that Vegeta is stronger than him after he wakes up though? I also think Piccolo said something to the safe effect. It was short-lived but he was legitimately stronger than Goku for a time.

Let me ask you this then. When he fought 20, was Piccolo stronger than Frieza at 100% power? Or did Android 19 and 20 just suck dragonballs?

Also I just want to point out that when Tobias says "Some fans say Freeza should never have been surpassed after Namek", what you actually mean is you. Only you. No other fan in the history of the series has said "Man, it sure would have been great if, after Goku has one of the coolest moments in the history of the medium and becomes the Super Saiyan so he can finally defeat Freeza, if he still wasn't strong enough and had to run away."

That's not what he (Saiga or Tobias, I'm no longer sure which said).

I believe the point is that, rather then actually fighting Frieza on Namek, and achieving such Super Saiyan to beat him, they should instead escaped Namek, aware of how vastly he outstripped him, leaving him to be a Bigger Bad / looming threat to be feared for when he eventually finds them or something along those lines.

That way, they could build up to eventually fighting him rather than Goku just going boom! Super Saiyan bitches!

I admit, that last part is an exaggeration.

@Sharknado: The one who mocked fans for "Frieza should never be surpassed" was Saiga, not Tobias. Sorry for the lack of context.

[up][up][up][up][up]So? It was even pointed out in-universe that Earth being moved to another Universe doesn't actually mean anything for the people living there, and the only real loser would've been Beerus.

I get the feeling Champa would try to stop his brother, and Whis and Vados definitely wouldn't tolerate them fighting.

You should just read the Chimera Ant arc in Hunter x Hunter. That tells the story you wanted the Cell Saga to be.

Yeah, all I could think about while reading Tobias's posts was "man, Meruem was such a great character".

Why didn't Vegeta and Piccolo get stronger than Goku after spending a second year in the time chamber?

Because spending longer time in the Chamber has diminishing returns, as Goku said.

He was training alone...no sparing partner in his bubble.

Yeah, the importance of sparring partners is brought up earlier in the arc. It's really the only reason Vegeta lets Trunks hang around him, but after their fight with Cell they can't put up with each other so go separately.

Also, Piccolo doesn't have a Super Saiyan form to master, which is where most of those gains came from.

But you can't really say that with certainty because we don't know what other opportunities could have happened if they did do that. And I don't see Frieza's influence on the series as a negative, or at least anymore of a negative than say, Beerus being retconned for much of the same reasons.

No, I can say that with certainty because all I said was that they focused on him over other opportunities. I didn't make say anything about what those opportunities or the outcomes would be, just that repeatedly returning to the same well means not doing something different.

You say Freeza is just Vegeta 2.0, I say Vegeta is just Piccolo 2.0, and I greatly prefer the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc over the Great Saiyan Scuffle.

I don't even know why you'd think Vegeta is Piccolo 2.0 - their time as villains is completely different, and even though both of them join the good guys their characters arcs while doing so are completely different. The similarities between the two are superficial and only more pronounced in EU-material that likes to paint them as Those Two Guys despite them not having much of a dynamic together.

Because from the MOMENT he's introduced, Freeza is presented as this insurmountable force. He's not just stronger than the heroes. He eclipses them. He's a grizzly facing kittens. No villain before had ever been showcased this way. Raditz was more powerful than Goku, but Goku and Piccolo teaming up could stand a chance. Nappa crushed the warriors, but you knew Goku was coming and he'd just gotten off training with a god so he'd take him on. Even when Vegeta and Goku fight, the difference between the two isn't that huge. Freeza being so impossible WTF strong is constantly drilled through the reader's head. The moment Krillin and Gohan land and they feel his power, they go "NOPE". Most of the Namek arc consists of avoiding the shit out of him. Even Vegeta with his numerous powerups through the arc still avoids Freeza till he can't. King Kai constantly drills it in "You can't beat Freeza". Even once Goku shows up, it's abundantly clear that despite him being leagues ahead of everyone, Freeza's final form is STILL miles ahead of him.

Sure, he was surpassed, but it took the fulfilling of an ancient myth, and it's the buildup that makes Goku surpassing Frieza amazing. Because unlike other villains, the arc kept telling us it can't be done.

I heavily disagree. I don't think the way Freeza was treated was all that different from previous (or following) villains, MOST of the serious villains end up being given the exact same treatment. It honestly takes a long time to get anything out of Freeza that is more than just the generic "he's the strongest dude ever! you won't win" that gets said about fucking everyone.

There's something to be said for how obnoxiously extreme it is in Freeza's case, but that's all he's got going for him. His role, his treatment both are very standard fare. He just gets by on Arc Fatique and very obnoxious writing.

Comparing Vegeta to Freeza again, I don't understand why Freeza's final fight is meant to justify why he's so much tougher when they follow largely the same outline until both survive the Spirit Bomb. Because from there, Goku gets a power-up that lets him actually beat Freeza with his own power and completely humiliate him, while against Vegeta Goku outright admits defeat and they're only barely able to force him to retreat due to some lucky circumstances. And Goku doesn't even surpass Goku in that arc!

I feel like Freeza's reputation is built on more the timing of his arc (in both Japanese and the West, the popularity peaked during the Namek/Android arcs, and for western fans there wasn't even DB before it) because those factors have an ENORMOUS influence on shaping people's opinions. Not only that, but Freeza was the "insurmountable guy" for so long because of how long the arc was dragged out. Hence the memetic "they're still on Namek".

you were likely wondering "What the fuck can even kill this guy!?" when he tanked a freaking Spirit Bomb and still had enough energy

Oh no I totally agree, when Vegeta did this I had that exact thought.

We get it, Saiga, your favorite arc is the Saiyan Arc. Some of us disagree: I personally would put it in the bottom half of Dragon Ball story arcs.

Not sure if posted but Wen Broly is getting split into two parts because of time constraints. Part 1 is still coming out on Christmas and part 2 should be out around New Years.

Wonder what next DB Cember's theme might be.
