Ok. I suppose that the Power Vacuum thing is a little too different for DBZ.
I admittedly torn. Super Saiyan is such a huge thing, and Frieza has to be a huge threat to counter it, but both of those things raised the bar so high, that all subsequent enemies needed to be at that level (or overt) to be a threat, and only a few characters could raise themselves to the level to match them.
In the end, it's the Power Creep, Power Seep of Dragonball I hate the most. I know others have said that it's not a bad thing many of the older characters backed off, and part of me realizes that's not untrue, but it still irks me that even if they did want to fight, they couldn't unless the enemy was incredibly weak.
And I know other people dislike when everyone gets focused on in a fight because it slows things down, and I get that as well, but that doesn't mean I have to like other fighters turned into cheerleaders because the villain is so ridiculously powerful they couldn't even hope to scratch him no matter what they do.
I get that's how it is, but I don't really like that. I suppose I should be happy they still show up, as opposed to just being forgotten.
One Strip! One Strip! If you want all of that then go watch One Piece.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Okay, you seem to be getting pretty defensive, Zelenal, and I'm not sure why.
I think it's entirely possible for someone to like Dragon Ball overall, but still dislike certain elements of it and wish that Toriyama or Toei or whoever hadn't gone that route - I think that TFS has made some comments to that effect as well.
There is room for criticism.

I do.
Well, I read it. Never really watched the One Piece anime that much.
I had other stuff to say, but I feel like it's not relevant, so I'll end it here.
Edit: And it looks like the conversation went on while I was finding my words.

One Strip! One Strip! There are more than 24 villains in the series so being as high as 22 is still pretty good.
This song needs more love.@Karkat: I'm defensive because I've heard these complaints so many times that I'm frankly sick of it. They're not even interesting complaints. It's just people wanting Dragon Ball to be like basically every other shounen fighting series out there. If all the changes people wanted to make to Dragon Ball were made, the result would be no better than Evolution- Dragon Ball In Name Only.
I'm not saying that people can't complain about Dragon Ball or that it's perfect or whatever other words you want to put in my mouth. I'm just really tired that, over in the main thread, most conversations boil down to complaining damn near everything the series has ever done or arguing about something until Saiga comes along and shuts it down with a quote from the manga or Daizenshuu.
I don't know about you guys but I'm here to celebrate fiction, not tear it down, and I happen to love Dragon Ball. It was a huge part of my childhood and had a major impact on my life. Not being okay with everything the series does and complaining about it is fine and dandy but, when I hear that almost to the exclusion of everything else, I get bitter.
So sorry, I guess. I'll just return to lurking for the next ten or so pages.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! The idea that other characters could have more fights is a criticism I can get behind. No need to give every character a fight in every arc, but just something interesting for them to do from time to time. I mean, Piccolo's role in the Buu saga didn't involve fighting and it was still pretty memorable. Ditto for Android 18 blackmailing Hercule. And Yamcha could stand to do something for once.
It's one of my criticisms of the U6 tournament arc: they could've had two supporting characters lose quickly early on (so, giving a brief spotlight to characters that don't normally have it, and showcase the opponents' abilities at the same time), but no, they just removed them out of the equation entirely. It was a very uninteresting development.
Yeah exactly.
The tournament was a good opportunity to get some mileage out of two characters who won't often get a chance to do much due to Can't Catch Up.
But instead, Buu is brought along just to get removed before hand, and Piccolo is forced to forfeit so that Vegeta can finally beat up Frieza (or as close as he will be allowed to get).
Hell, since Monaka was a waste of a slot, it's essentially the Goku and Vegeta show from start to finish, which is NOT what we were told we were getting. If you create a venue that lets you use other characters......WHY NOT FUCKING USE THEM?
One Strip! One Strip! At least Piccolo gave a good showing. That's more than can be said for most.
This song needs more love.I agree with Zelenal's point about the main thread by the way. Yeah, if you like something you should be able and willing to criticize its faults, but the main thread often seems less about appreciating a flawed piece of work and wishing everything about it had been done differently, with the same topics of "what should have been changed" coming up over and over again.
At that point you have to start wondering what these people even do like about it.

Who was #24? I must have missed it.
Also, regarding the pacing of arcs, I feel like something could be messed around with there. Say, Androids and Cell show up past DB, followed by Vegeta and only then going to Namek.
Granted, this would require thorough revamping of the story. >.>
