It's hard to remember now, but back when the genre was started by Little Kuriboh there were maybe a handful of Abridged Series worth watching. Aside from the aforementioned Yu-Gi-Oh! you had Naruto Abridged, Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged, and Berserk Abridged. Dragon Ball Z Abridged became that fifth finger.
Back before the series came out there were a lot of fights over which names they were going to use, here they used both and referenced the fights.

This. It's basically the same joke as when Piccolo gives up on trying to pronounce Makankosappo - which is a mouthful even in English, translating to Demonic Piercing Light Murder Gun - and hastily renames it the Special Beam Cannon, but executed much more poorly.

I can't blame them. Looking back, I'm surprised that episode ended up becoming as big as it did.
