Mr. Satan AKA Mark.
Yes, I know you were probably just being facetious.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! You know, watching the Abridged version of Cell's announcement, and then watching the original Japanese version of the same clip, and then remembering the dub of it (which was also pretty good), I can't help but feel that of all the villains, Cell had the most style.
He possessed a theatricality about him that no one else had before, and it's something I rather like about him.
I suppose all those egos from his genetic donors just combined together to create the ultimate show-man.
One Strip! One Strip! You kinda got carried away there in the time it took me to respond.
Goku and Gohan probably haven't mastered Super Saiyan yet. That's what made them surpass Piccolo and that's when Gohan's hidden power came out.
The passage of time in the Room is screwy so we don't know how many months, days or hours inside the room they have left in their training even if they're coming out soon in-universe.
He MAY have surpassed Goku at that time but hadn't shown the signs of it or if mastering Super Saiyan.
Anyway, on the idea of Kuririn making his guess off potential, that makes even ''less'" sense. Why would Gohan be number three? Who is ahead of him? If Kuririn knows anything about Gohan's potential, he'd put him number one. If he's not taking that into account, he has no reason to put him so high.
It's definitely a joke that needs to make sense to work. Saying he's third without an idea of who is meant to be higher or weaker than him wouldn't give a reason for Vegeta to respond like that.
Yeah, I think he's just assuming that Goku and Gohan will be stronger than Gohan and Trunks because Goku is always stronger than Vegeta, and Gohan is with him, so he'll be stronger by default.
Whether that means he thinks Gohan will be stronger than Trunks or not, it probably means Krillin is assuming Gohan will probably be #2 or #3 on the list, which means Vegeta is fourth.
At least that's my assumption.
One Strip! One Strip!I figure the joke was just that Vegeta's ego is being utterly destroyed since Trunks showed up. There's a Super Saiyan before Vegeta is even able to attain it, everyone's going on about how strong Goku is and how he is needed, people disrespecting him, getting both his arms broken by some blond who is only wanting to kill Goku, and now someone even more egotistical than himself is making him look bad. Vegeta's automatically assuming the worst because of Krillin's assessment of Gohan being the third strongest.
x4 Your explanations are overthinking it way more than pointing out the lack of logic.
Even following that train of thought Kuririn has no reason to expect Gohan to be third. He was the weakest of the four going in, if he were to develop the same as Vegeta and Trunks did he'd still just be fourth.

I think Krillin's rating goes
- Goku
- Vegeta
- Gohan
- Trunks
Krillin's taking it on faith that Goku will be stronger than Vegeta and Gohan strong enough to at least compare to Trunks after the RoSaT training, but he's always kinda done that where Goku was concerned. Like when he just assumed that Goku, upon arrival on Namek, would be powerful enough to handle an even more powerful Vegeta despite the fact that Vegeta beat Goku and took a combined effort to bring down the last time.
There's no reason he would rank Gohan above Vegeta or Goku, but it does make sense that he might rank Gohan above Trunks - both because he's seen how fast Gohan's power grows in comparison to everyone else around him and because even if he's just in Trunks's ballpark, he's also experienced and skilled enough to not make a mistake like the one Trunks just finished humiliating himself with.
By asking, "Who's fourth?" Vegeta is baiting him into confessing that he thinks Gohan is superior to either Vegeta himself or Trunks - and either answer would result in another mark on the Krillin Owned Count.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Krillin hadn't seen it in action yet. He was just gauging the level of power coming off of it.
I mean, he wasn't there long enough for Cell to deliver "The Reason You Suck" Speech calling out the flaw, but he could still sense the fight while he was retreating with Vegeta. Nothing precludes him from noticing how slow Trunks's attacks are.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Except that Arale would have probably kicked his ass.
I mean, she runs far more on Cartoon Physics then anyone in Dragon Ball.
Or at least that's my assumption.
One Strip! One Strip!Cell can't absorb people who aren't Androids 17 and 18. He is not Majin Buu; apart from the two components he needs to absorb to achieve Perfection, he only drinks people.
I mean, there was that one time in one of the Budokai games where he absorbed Krillin and became a pint-sized, orange Perfect Cell, but even that was All Just a Dream.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I mean, the whole 'Gohan is the 3rd strongest' might have just been a counting error. Like the 'I guess that makes it 8' joke in Super Android 13, when there were only 7 Androids Trunks missed and Vegeta should have said "That's 7 Androids, do I hear 8?" instead.
The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby! It's not a counting error when it's the whole crux of the joke. I think endless arguments about exactly what power level what person had at what time is just predisposing people against the idea that a character might have a subjective view on who's strongest based on factors other than raw numbers.
I'm one of the biggest supporters of Power Levels here, and I really don't give a shit.

Yeah, I'm predicting Episode 60 for the end of the Cell Saga.
55 will probably cover Goku/Gohan getting out of the HTC and the reveal of Hercule along with the return of Dende. 56 will be the start of the Cell Games with Hercule getting stomped and Goku stepping up. 57 will be Goku vs. Cell with Goku giving up at the end. 58 will be Gohan and the Cell Jr's, him going SSJ 2 at the end. 59 will be SSJ 2 Gohan vs. Cell with him blowing up at the end + a Stinger where he comes back. 60 will cover the end of the fight, the aftermath, and Trunks' return to the future.
But, don't forget we still have the Hatchiyak special (Maybe, it sounded like they'd do this) and Broly's movie to go through somewhere in-between.
