He tried to drink Piccolo too. Neither instance was an absorption like he does to 17 and 18.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Absorbing =/= Drinking
Drinking Piccoro, is like doing what he did to every single other human.
Android 16 mislead him by his presence near 17 and 18, he believed 16 was also human machine.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. Why he should have known that? All the "androids" he is familiar with are actually cyborgs. Drinking probably would have worked with 18 and 16, but that would be detrimental to Cell's plan, as he needed to absorb them.
Also, how can you guys not distinguish between "drinking" and "absorbing". I mean, these are not the technical terms, but the mechanics are blatantly different in the story. There is no way to mistake them.

17 and 18 are mostly bio-mechanical. At least, that's what the version of the manga I was just reading said. For all I know, it could have been translated wrong or something.
The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby!Yeah, with the exception of this huge thing that makes all the difference.
Absorbing the androids is explicitly a completely different thing than just drinking people. Like, it is very clear that even if Cell actually drunk Piccolo dry he wouldn't have become as powerful as semi-perfect Cell, even though Piccolo and 17 were equivalent in power. If that wasn't the case Cell wouldn't have just let Piccolo drawn.
The transformation is a major point. It is silly to just brush it aside.
It is not absolutely confirmed, but given what we know, I think "drinking" results in Cell just stealing (part?) of the ki/power/whatever. The absorption actually combines his physiology to the androids, which causes the transformation+huge augment in power.

Yes, obviously, which is why I put obvious there. The point being made is, they are both ways to incorporate someone into his body and grow stronger. No has disputed that the mechanics are different or confused the two.
This started because someone went Cell absorbed people and Tobias (or maybe someone else went) "No he only absorbed 17 and 18". Even you said these aren't official terms. If someone wants to call him "drinking" people "absorbing" them who cares as long as there is no confusion?

That is a good question, that was not answered.

No, it wasn't clear, as one of the answered showed a video from GT in which Cell tries to absorb Goku, as if he was an android. Furthermore, the comment about absorbing Kuririn becoming weaker only make sense if it is his "absorb and transform" method, as "drinking" obviously doesn't make him weaker if he drinks weak people (he basically only drank weak people).
So, no, drawing the line on the distinction is not pedantic.

If I had to make up an answer I would use that, yeah. But "his tail doesn't actually extendnote " and "Sayan pride" are both good enough too.
Not the original comment. One of the answers. The last post last page, to be precise. And, no, it is not pedantry if there is confusion.

The Krillin comment was from someone making a joke. It's not what started this. And Tobias Drake was being pedantic because he know what the commentator meant and still felt the need to comment on it.
But, it's not a big deal either way.

He gets stronger by drinking people, but even setting that aside it's a pretty potent weapon. Anyone but Piccolo would have been crippled by that at least until they ate a senzu.
