It's Office Politics 101. When an employer makes a request like this, whether it's asking for a donation or soliciting an employee for a date or announcing a "voluntary" function, there is always that question in the back of an employee's mind: will my job be endangered if I say no?
And that is a question that is impossible to answer. No matter what you choose, no matter what happens as a consequence, you will never know for certain.

They're kind of shitty

A legal battle? Against Disney?
I mean, you can try, but succeeding? That's another matter entirely.

Oh God! Natural light! That is true. But you can lose your job or otherwise endanger yourself.
It's still a scumbag business move whether you can Weasel Words your way out of it or not.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! In theory, sure.
But employees rarely have the kind of legal resources that employers have, especially the most important: money. An employee would bankrupt him or herself trying to combat the unjust termination long before the employer ever even felt a dent.
And it wouldn't even accomplish anything because employers are not required to give a reason for termination. That's often part of the employment contract that most employees sign. It's called At-Will Employment and it's a clause that states the employer may terminate your employment at any time for any reason.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.At the most optimistic, they're putting the employee in an uncomfortable situation. On paper there will be no repurcussions... except for the fact that, even if there genuinely are none and the employer will do nothing, it's
The employer has all the power here. Even if they will do nothing, they're still putting pressure on the employees by asking.
@ Pushover: That... is hopelessly naive. Assuming the employer is not dumb enough to say "you're fired for not donating," the employee doesn't really have the legal case to fight the several billion dollar company here. Plus, on top of firing, there's many, many, many ways the employer can make things harder for the worker. It could be as benign as limiting opportunities to advance, for example. Good luck proving that in a court. You'll just lose several thousand dollars in court fees.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.To quote:
Your contribution is important to all of us, but I want to emphasize that all contributions are voluntary and have no impact on your job status, performance review, compensation, or employment. Any amount given or the decision not to give will not advantage or disadvantage you. You have the right to refuse to contribute without reprisal.
If they ry something, just quote this: ^ at them.
You won't get a chance to, because you won't ever know for sure that your refusal to donate is what screwed you.
Ten years later, you've been passed over for six chances to advance. No reason was ever given. Your career's upward momentum has simply ended and no one will tell you why.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Thing is, they can limit you or fire you and you never prove that the cause was you not donating provided they aren't a blithering idiot.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! Here's the thing, can you prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that not donating is the reason they fired you?
Because you have to remember your employer can legally fire you because he doesn't like the color of your shoelaces or how your face looks.
Can you really prove it was over donations and not your face? The burden of proof is on you, not them. You're the prosecutor and they're legally the victim.

Oh really when? They can even use paper-thin subtlety and be unusually harsh on your next cock-up.
Oh, you filled out this form incorrectly. We don't approve of that here. We're going to have to let you go.
It's an employer's market right now. The workplace system is heavily rigged in favor of employers over employees.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I say we burn their houses down with lemons.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! And here's the kicker: Even if you are a benevolent employer and would never do anything like that, it's a shitty thing to do because your employees have no way of knowing that the employer won't do anything suspect. In the back of their minds, it's a constant worry.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. It's actually interesting to watch the ever-growing backlash against corporate business practices coupled with the rise of alternatives like crowdfunding brought about by the internet. Corporations are kingdoms that rule through financial superiority rather than threat of force, and the growing trend of options that sidestep the big companies is like watching a peasant uprising in the realm of finance.
That, exactly. It's the Strange Guy At Bar Conflict. You're probably not a rapist, but she doesn't know that.

Does Disney have a history of doing that, or is this just baseless speculation?
