I'm also black. I think a lot of black people bonded over DBZ because it spoke to something not straight white male. There's Latino fans as well. Shonen now has become the standard for white guys, but back with DBZ, it matched the era of a bit more off the wall style that we had in music, TV, etc.
As for more black guys wearing the clothes, I think we just collectively decided to stop giving a fuck about what society said, and continue rocking style as we like it. I don't wear the stuff, but I see it worn by black and Asian guys (and to a lesser extent Latino and even white guys) as pride in being a nerd.
I'm surprised Battle of Gods was their number one, but I don't listen to them too closely to have called it.
I read this article on the internet somewhere, and it was talking about how Goku going Super Saiyan really resonated with a lot of African-American's culture and personal experience.
EDIT: I found it

The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby!I was really hoping Battle of Gods would be a lot lower... (sigh). Everyone already knows how much I think Beerus is a Karma Houdini Villain Sue, so no use dragging that dead horse out again. So I'll just have to shut up and watch them gush over something I hate.

To be fair, a lot of it is factually incorrect.
I predict that either Tommorow or Christmas Day is when they will put up the next DBZ abridged episode.
Watch Symphogear
He gets his jollies destroying planets just like Frieza. The only difference is the fact that he gets away with it for some completely unbelievable reason.
Seriously, Balance of Good and Evil is about as credible a trope cliché as The Chosen One nowadays...

He should have been killed. That's my opinion, and I stand by it.

He didn't really seem to enjoy destroying planets. It something he just did.
And you don't really get to decide whether a trope is credible or not, in universe his job is actually required for new planets to come into existence. I can understand disliking it the trope and that coloring your opinion of the character. But you are not the one who decides how the mechanics of the DBZ universe works.

It's not that I'm saying it isn't true in that universe, I'm saying it shouldn't be true in that universe. It's just... stupid!
Same way that any other planet-destroying maniac gets what they deserve; hitting him really hard.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerHonestly, Goku defeating Beerus would have made BoG significantly worse.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Let me put it this way.
When you kill a Force of Nature, either everything goes to shit, or something worse takes it's place.
For example, a story in Marvel comics had an alternate universe where Death was killed, so Life was allowed to consume the universe and create a cancerous abomination that threatened to consume other worlds if it wasn't stopped.
Needless to say, perhaps Beerus' existence, or the existence of a God of Destruction in general, is necessary to prevent a greater evil from appearing.
Super outright says there's no meaning in the way he destroys things.
Not a Sue by any means, but it is easy to see him as a Karma Houdini. Forcing people to grovel before him and threatening destruction for coercion is not part of his job, that's abusing his position.

But Super is shit so that doesn't really matter.
