I mean, Battle of Gods isn't so much the "best" Dragon Ball movie and more the only one that's good, or the only one you shouldn't be more than just a little embarrassed of.
And, like, it's still kinda bad, as movies go. A little bit. Tiny bit.
But the animation and the story and characters are well done, and the plot is original(!) and well-told. There's character interactions and quirky humor and everything that makes Dragon Ball, y'know, Dragon Ball.
And it's fun. Well-animated. The fights are impressive in showcasing the main villain. And also just plain gorgeous.
Vegeta's singing is actually better than Krillin's.
And better animated.
And, like, Krillin seems to sincerely like the singing. And it serves no point in the plot or Krillin's character. In the movies, Krillin humiliating himself is par for the course.
What's amazing about the Bingo scene is that it's Vegeta.
The Bingo scene is the most important part of Vegeta's character arc, and the single best moment in all of Dragon Ball.

The animation is pretty, yes, but it's not uncommon for the films, the films typically have better animation than the series. And honestly, I miss the sort of animation we see in the Z films, you don't see that art style anymore.
Battle of Gods resembles Toriko and One Piece and One Punch Man and everything else Madhouse animates these days.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!That's a good thing to me. Dragon Ball's animation was good for the time, but it doesn't really stick with me much.
Modern stuff by Madhouse, Ufotable and Toei's animators on their Pretty Cure staff have spoiled me.

Watch SymphogearPersonally I like to think that the blue hair form is a sort of transitional state between Super Saiyan God and another form. Like, you start with red hair, then it gets more blue as you get stronger until it starts turning another colour. White maybe? I just get the feeling that we're going to get a new hair colour in the next movie. We are getting another movie, right?
We are unlikely to get a "next movie". The story is continuing in Super, which - for better or worse - took a Mulligan on these movies.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Because Toriyama is more directly involved with the anime then he was with the movies.
Watch SymphogearI'm pretty sure a lot of fucking people saw Battle of Gods.
Like, both opened as Number 1 in the Japanese Box Office.
That's not insignificant.
Assuming people have already seen them is actually a safe assumption.
Hell, more people have probably seen them than are watching Dragon Ball Super.

Watching the entire Z or Kai anime before watching Super is more of a feat than watching the two movies.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I've actually met people who've seen Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' and have no idea that Dragon Ball Super exists.
They're not in a bad position, really.
Also, it's not terribly surprising since Super hasn't been dubbed yet.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Just putting it out there - Toriyama is NOT as involved in Super's movie retellings as he was with the originals. Resurrection 'F' literally had a script written by him which Toei used as the basis for the movie.
They're retelling the movies because they don't want people to have to buy prior DV Ds just to know what the hell is going on on television. I mean, that's a ridiculous concept. "If you want to know who Beerus and Whis and what the Super Saiyan God forms are...you have to watch the movies first. We won't tell you anything."

The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby!In a sequel series, some amount of homework is inevitably mandated. By the same logic, they wouldn't be able to explain who Goku, Mr. Satan, Krillin, etc. are either without doing a complete retelling of the entire manga up to this point.
There had to be a point where they said, "We're starting HERE and we'll just summarize everything that came before, if we do anything about it at all." They chose to put that point before Beerus but after Buu and just go forward with retelling the story of Beerus for some reason, rather than the more reasonable starting point of after Resurrection.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.No, they don't, because they've been airing Dragon Ball Kai on television for the past few years. There was a break in-between the Cell and Buu arcs because they had Toriko on, but besides that...
The anime is one thing, but having movies as prerequisite knowledge is a bit annoying. It never aired on television. If you didn't see it in theatres, you're out of luck unless you buy the DV Ds. And apparently the DVD market isn't very strong in Japan...? That's what I've heard.
I mean, the first episode of Super literally aired a week after the last episode of Buu Kai. That's why they didn't need to explain things. Like how DBZ started after Dragon Ball. That's how they're treating Super.
Retelling the movies doesn't take up too many resources. And in the meantime, they can spend more time working on what's going on in Universe 6. If that's what they're actually doing.
