The voices are very similar, but I've noticed subtle differences. His Gero voice sounds older and a tad sillier to me (since he's supposed to be way out of his league), while Cooler sounds more intimidating.
What DBZA doesn't do, however, is showcase just how talented of a mimic Ivan is. His bit as Gaara in Death Battle was a very good channeling of Liam O Brien, and his role as Gekko Moria is an extraordinarily good impression of the original seiyuu. Lani can still run circles in terms of sheer talent, but I think part of that is Lani just having a much larger resume.

Regarding Favorite TFS Joke
Another poster gave the fantastic exchange already where Goku messes up Frieza's attempt at an intimidating rhetorical question, but for me, Frieza's response sells every interaction he has with Goku:
"Oh my god, I traded Vegeta for this."
Frieza now understands buyer's remorse.
Cyanide and Happiness perfectly summarized my thoughts on the matter
.
Ending of episode 44
I didn't like it much either, but in a good way, if that makes sense. It felt like the kind of thing you're not supposed to like. It was a horrific establishment of Cell's character, the kind of thing that can just be inferred to be happening offscreen but is sort of important to actually show if you want your villain to inspire that visceral sense of revulsion.
It was awful to sit through, but it made Cell more punchable as a result. It's the unpleasant aftertaste in your mouth, the backwash of horror that comes up even when he's at his most charming and witty to remind you that he is an ugly, horrible thing.
This is important for Cell. Frieza's villainy was in both his goals and his methods. Everything about him was monstrous, and so it was easy for him to remind you how much of a monster he is with every word that comes out of his mouth while still being hilarious and clever.
Cell's motivations get a little murky when he achieves his Perfect Form. He's only really a villain because he goes out of his way to kick puppies. He needs a few good, solid puppy kicks to justify being the Bad Guy.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Basically, if Cell wasn't so gleefully willing to horrifically murder people for sustenance and later lulz, he wouldn't be a villain. He'd be a time-travelling warrior who traveled to the past to slay the two homicidal androids trying to murder our hero and then have awesome fights with the protagonists forever. He'd be Trunks, but better.
Cell's villainy is encapsulated entirely in the fact that, in addition to being the Enemy of My Enemy, he's also a sadistic horror. TFS needed to show that.
A non-sadistic horror Cell would have slotted right in next to Piccolo and Vegeta like, "Hey guys, it's a good day for fighting, let's have some awesome battles today! Who's up for a jolly good spar?"

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.No, it makes perfect sense. 4/5 of his genetic makeup consists of sadistic assholes, assuming his Piccolo genes are pre-Character Development.
What I'm insisting is that because Cell's motives aren't particularly villainous, his means need to be established to be so pretty early on. By the time we reach the Cell Games, it's a little late for him to suddenly start being a dipshit - and most of his asshole behavior during that arc is ambiguous.
The early rampage of Imperfect Cell establishes him right off the bat to be a monster that needs to be opposed. It sets an important tone for his character before setting him against the other villains. This tone is necessary, because it allows the audience to even consider Cell absorbing 17 and 18 to be a bad thing in the first place.
If we and the protagonists weren't thoroughly turned off by Cell murdering innocent people en masse to obtain his power, Cell would be the antihero of the arc and arguably a less vile one than Vegeta was on Namek. This early massacre is what made him a villain. It's a very important part of his character.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub."Bad guy does bad things." How is this a discussion?
I've said it before, but most of Lord Slug is pretty much my favorite "moment." People embracing Jesus' death army, Piccolo's savviness about the Quirky Miniboss Squad, his dealings with the "big tough ugly stupid one" (especially his "Neat" before blasting him), Piccolo's entire gambit at the end ("WHAT"), and Goku's awkward small talk with giant Slug followed by a high speed Kamehameha are all great.
Buuuuuuuut gun to my head, my favorite moment would be Piccolo shaking Gohan going "Hey. Hey Gohan. You wanna do that thing… where you get really mad and start beating the guy up… Gohan… Gohan…? Don’t you f**king ignore me." Perfect delivery, lampshading the source material, and just really funny as hell.

Christmas Tree of Might has honestly become part of my repertoire of Christmas specials I must watch yearly.
It's almost time again.
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerSame. Any time my household is like, "It's that time of the year again, let's watch a Christmas special," we usually start with Christmas Tree of Might.
That opening tune of, "Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell ROCK THE DRAGON, DRAGON BALL Z!" really does a great job setting the tone we want for the holiday season.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.One thing I remember about Final Bout is that a lot of different kinds of moves can be beam struggled with everything else (like Cell's Barrier, I think), which is something the Budokai and Tenkaichi games only sorta got around to (iirc, Budokai did type-struggles-type, so the Death Beam could struggle with the Dodonpa but not the Kamehameha).
