The whole Ginyu episode is perfect because of the aversion of Voices Are Mental. It really highlights just how talented Masako and Antfish are that they could mimic each other's performances so well, and it really wouldn't have been as hilarious otherwise.
I loved that aversion too. It's so simple yet so rare to see.

I always hated the trope Voices Are Mental.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseI like for mental voices to be mental, but not physical. When I'm voicing books and comics for my household and a mind-swap happens, the way I read it is that they speak in the voice of the body they're in but with the personality that came with them, but they think in their original voice.
So, for instance, during the Superior Spider-Man arc in which Doc Ock was in Spider-Man's body, I would read SpOck's voice as I would Spider-Man's but with an egotistical edge to it, and use my unmodified Ock voice for his voice-over narration.

That said, I'd have to say the worst was in Batman Beyond, when the fact Ra's al Ghul was mind-uploaded into his daughter's body was because when he speaks naturally, it's in the old guy's voice rather than the sexy daughter's. Just sort of weird.

My various fanfics.I despise Voices Are Mental. It's common in cartoons, but fortunately live action generally does away with it. I say generally because I once saw a show where this kid switched bodies with the elderly butler of his schoolyard nemesis. So instead of having the kid's actor play the part of the old man stuck in a young kid's body, they dressed up the kid actor in the old man's clothes and everyone who looked at him thought he was the old man; and vice-versa. It was incredibly stupid.

It makes sense, too. People tend to have a mental "voice" that differs greatly from their actual voice; it's why you see people get shocked when they first hear themselves in a recording.

Yeah, it's bad enough when a show's playing Voices Are Mental straight, but it's worse when the show actively addresses it. Because now there's no reason why no one shouldn't notice the literal voice change other than being completely daft.

That's true. I think some writers believe it makes things more realistic for other characters to notice the voice swap, but it actually produces the opposite effect.
Have you ever watched a show where it was clearly meant to be pitch black, everyone was stumbling around like it was pitch black, they were talking about how they couldn't see, but there was enough light in the actual image that we could tell where they are and what they were interacting with? This fourth-wall schism is done for the audience's benefit; there is no light in the scene, but we can see anyway because otherwise we'd be staring at a black screen. Our observation conflicts with their reality in such a way as to allow for an easier understanding of what is transpiring.
Voices Are Mental is the same thing. It's done for the audience's benefit. Goku is not actually speaking with Ginyu's voice, just his tone and inflection, but we hear it in Ginyu's voice because that's a convenient way to communicate that the change has occurred.
If Goku is actually speaking with Ginyu's voice, that just raises further questions and confuses the issue unnecessarily. It makes far less sense for other characters to react to a trope that they aren't supposed to be able to perceive.

Don't you mean if Goku isn't actually speaking with his voice in Ginyu's body and vice versa? Because the way you explained that contradicts your point, I think.
Edit: Actually, looking at it I'm not sure if you're even talk about TFS version or the actual thing.

I meant in the original, and I was just using it as an example.
Piccolo, Krillin, and Dr. Gero probably had the best what-ifs in Supersonic Warriors. Supersonic Warriors 2 was a 'little' more grounded with its what-ifs but came with the trade-off of being a far superior fighting game (that being said, Ginyu's what-if in 2 is GOLD).

It's just as well that Dragon Power defeated TFS at Rabbit Gang. It was only one level after that before the game goes from hilariously bizzare DB retelling to bland filler for another half of the game.
I have a message from another time...
