[up][up] Y'know what discussion of these issues needs? More strawmen and hyperbole.

That's perfect. It's exactly what I've come to expect.

And dread.

So... am I an ass for laughing at all of these jokes?

No. It might be worth it for you to think about the jokes a little more, but laughing at them is fine.

The first rule of any social justice based critique is that all media is probably a little problematic somewhere, and it's okay to enjoy problematic media.

Yup. I guess we're monsters or something.

...Okay, see, posts like that make you a bit of an ass.

Like, half an ass.

A single cheek all by its lonesome.

Hey now, I was just asking what I felt to be a legitimate question. I was honestly curious if you thought less of me because I enjoyed those jokes. Not that I really would have cared if you answered with an affirmative.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!

Sorry.

I shouldn't have directed that at you.

And, I mean.

No, I don't think less of you for that.

You're alright.

...God I hate the way people think of these issues in our society.

The way "racist" and "sexist" and other terms have become labels of individuals rather than descriptions of behavior.

"Sexist" and "racist" aren't things that people are. Sexism and racism are things people do sometimes. They're systematic ideas and constructs upheld by people's behavior, usually because they don't know any better, or because they're just repeating what they've been taught over and over.

Doing bad things doesn't make you a bad person.

...And, fuck, this is the wrong thread, but it's also I think a damned good point I made and I don't want to delete it because I'll never remember it.

Hmm.

Fuck it.

@Heatth

To answer your question from last page, my girlfriend hasn't seen a single episode of DBZ, yet still looks forward to every new episode of Abridged. In her mind I think the show holds up fine.

Dragon Ball Z Abridged can stand on it's own because it's basically a second dub of the anime at this point.

My BFF has only seen glimpses of the show, like, fifteen years ago so she's basically running blind through the Abridged, and she also loves it. I do have to explain certain gags to her every now and then like Jeice being from Space Australia that seem like a non-sequitor without familiarity with the dub, but that's it.

It's fun going through the Abridged with someone who hasn't seen the original. At the end of the recent episode, she turned to me and went, "...he's not. No. Tell me Vegeta is NOT about to do what I think he's about to do."

We've also watched 18 break Vegeta's arm about fifty times because that's her favorite episode.

[up][up][up]&[up]Cool.

[up][up]I feel the same, but I have watched almost all of it as a kid and read the manga multiple times from start to finish. Some things I find self explanatory might be not as obvious if you don't actually have familiarity to the source material. I am very glad that is not apparently the case, though.

I do have to explain certain gags to her every now and then like Jeice being from Space Australia that seem like a non-sequitor without familiarity with the dub, but that's it.

As someone who don't have familiarity with the USA dub myself, I just assumed his voice had an Australian accent.

Yep. For no apparent reason, Jeice was given a thick Aussie accent.

There was also the "Space Soda" bet between Jeice and Burter which evolved into the Spacey's commercial in Abridged.

Plus Frieza made references to things like baseball and golf that he should reasonably have no knowledge of.

All of this became the "Space X" running gag in Abridged.

[up]Oh, wow. So the dub compensated their audience lack of knowledge for tokusatsu jokes by adding in other random references? Seems fair.tongue

I don't remember if my dub did something similar (the only things I remember from the dubs are the songs), but I am pretty sure the manga did not. As for the bet, I think it was for sweets or other silly things, but I am fairly certain they were not prefixednote  by the "space" qualifier.

Anyway, personally I just shrug off dub jokes. I know they exist, but they clearly are not obtrusive enough to confuse me if I don't understand them. I don't even know how frequent they are.

Ours totally had the space qualifier. "You still owe me a Space Soda" was a direct quote, IIRC, from the dub.

Abridged added the, "Space burger and some space fries" and subsequent hilarious advertisement.

I read the manga first and still haven't seen most of the anime and that is hilarious.

FUN FACT: The "Little Green" nickname for Dende as well as Krillin and Guru calling Nail "Big Green" is a gag on a different English dub for Dragon Ball, the highly memetic Ocean dub, in which Piccolo was renamed Big Green.

Ocean dub wasn't where he was called Big Green. I don't remember what it was officially called but now it's basically only known as the Big Green dub.

Here's some of their "better" material.

It was the AB dub, which was aired in the UK. It had a few of the people from the Ocean dub, however.

Well, the name is accurate (especially since Piccolo is the tallest of the whole group).

It's stupid, but accurate.

Portugal's dub was unique. Besides being based off the French version (Saiyans are "Space Warriors", Piccolo is "Satan", etc.), there were only 6-10 voice actors from the start of DB to the end of GT, and they ad-libbed often. This lead to random jokes and one-liners everywhere, plenty 4th wall breaking, and weird stuff like Dodoria and Ginyu singing opera mid-fight. It's like an Abridged version before that was ever a thing.

[up][up][up]Geez, it's like the acting gets worse every time I hear it. The weirdest thing is that it managed to get a release in UK of all places. Who there thought that was passable?

It does make a little bit of sense to call Piccolo "Satan" since his dad is, ya know, the Demon King and all.
