@Tobias Drake: You seem to be under the impression that I'm saying that Shonen manga should not have women playing the same roles. Sorry if that's the impression I caused, as I'm definitely an advocate that Pan should've been a better character in GT, or any other material. I was just saying that giving her a meaningless power-up at the end of the series is bad writing, because GT did exactly that with Uub: giving him a power-up just so he could lose faster. We'll agree to disagree about Goten and Trunks, though, you think that was meaningless, I don't.
And if "little girl" is bad phrasing, then "toddler" it'll be. The main point of that sentence was the fact that she's already beating up adults, ergo, she'll continue doing what her relatives did.
No, the shonen line wasn't aimed at you. It's something Cruherrx said earlier in his argument with unnoun, basically to the effect of, "There aren't a lot of good female characters because it's shonen, and shonen is aimed at young boys, and young boys think girls are icky, so female characters shouldn't really be in shonen much.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.
Oh wow, complete misrepresentation there.
What I said was if you're looking for gender diversity and that kind of stuff in shonen, you're looking in the wrong place because they aim for a specific demographic and follow conventions that have worked since their inception.
Also, there's years' worth of studies showing that 5-12 year olds don't like to associate with the other gender.
"If you weren't so crazy I'd think you were insane."Well the last games I played were the Budokai ones on the PS 2, what's it like in comparison to those I guess is my question.
Oh really when? They feel closer to Budokai 3 than they do the Tenkaichi ones, in all honesty. Buuuuuuut these feel like genuine three-dimension fights, where flight is a crucial part of gameplay. Because of this, you can't just spam energy blasts and button mash your way to wins. For some missions I wish I could though, because keeping Gohan and Krillin alive ain't easy.
This was linked in the Dragonball thread. Frieza's new form from Fukkatsu no F.

"If you weren't so crazy I'd think you were insane."So change that. We must do our best to discourage such behavior, as it ends up doing a great deal of harm. Besides, I don't know what today's youth is like in this regard - it's possible that they're more accepting in this regard. My point is, the reason that you were like this wasn't due to any inherent traits, but due to learned behaviors - if we can have more Badass, adventure-loving heroines in media targeted at young boys, maybe these attitudes will become less prominent over time.
To be honest, if a ten year old boy told me that girls were gross, the first thing I'd do is ask him why he thought that.
I can't see how Goku or Vegeta's genders make the series better or worse, sorry.
I never said Goku or Vegeta. But I don't see why we couldn't have had other Saiyans who were female, or made one of their kids who were actually featured in the series a girl. I mean, make Trunks a girl. Why the hell not? Can you honestly tell me that would harm the series if Trunks had been a girl from the beginning? I mean, people probably wouldn't be thrilled to see Vegeta smack his daughter around, but it's not like that's absolutely necessary to the story either.
Oh God! Natural light!

HEY!
We are all made of star stuff. Very, very weird star stuff.
