He did.
Yeah, Hellzone Grenade is a favorite of mine. In terms of attacks DBZ very quickly degenerated to everything being a beam, a volley, or a ball, with minimal variance between them. Hellzone Grenade was cool and actually had some utility, what with basically trapping a guy in a controlled explosion.
The Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack is another favorite of mine for similar reasons.
Hellzone Grenade is a good one.
Alongside the piercing nature of Special Beam Canon.
We've already discussed how the best attacks aren't just your basic beam attacks, or energy spams haven't we?
Solar Flare saves lives.
One Strip! One Strip!Vegeta can but he doesn't, because Vegeta likes to be a sledgehammer. Tactics are lost on him.
The one time Frieza did it, the attack proved potent enough to kill even Frieza.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Can work on Cell, but the likelihood of hitting is core is terrible. Possible, not probable.
Utterly harmless against Buu.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.1) That was filler, and 2) even if we ignore that it was filler, that's a sleight against Krillin's power level, not the Kienzan. Frieza's was probably stronger than Krillin's because that's how power levels work.

They aren't.
The scene you're describing is filler, but in-canon it would've probably been the same result. The Kienzan is Krillin's ki, but compressed really finely to increase cutting power, like how Piccolo's Makankosappo is more suited for drilling. What's important to take from that is the abilities aren't magic and are limited by their users' respective power levels.
"If you weren't so crazy I'd think you were insane."The Kienzan cuts anything in canon, but is used as The Worf Effect in filler. Just like the Makankosappo pierces through anything in canon, but in filler it is consistently punched away.
And Cell's core... I think the Instant Kamehameha got that one, alongside Cell's entire upper torso. But he could regenerate due to still having plenty of body left. Or something.

I don't recall that. What was that called?
Then there was Yamcha's controllable Spirit Ball, Tien's Cast from Hit Points Tri-Beam, and Burter and Jeice's Seizure Procedure...

And then the villains got more and more regenerate-y, making huge impractical energy waves the only way to go.
I have a message from another time...
