How would they know Cell was a thing? He's from the future. Even if they were familiar with the concept of Cell, they would only know him as a larval thing in a pod.

I also was just kind of confused by 18's line. Was she referring to the extreme deformation in their bodies when getting hit? Because that's not nearly as funny as the line "did I just see his foot?" from earlier.
Not just the deformation, but taking turns deforming each other. Like a rubber punch tug-of-war.

Piccolo should have known that raising his energy would give Cell the Androids' locations. And outright forgot to warn them about him. The fight was a waste of time that served 17 in Cell's platter.
At least Abridged!Piccolo has the excuse that Cell didn't tell him he wanted to find the other androids so he could eat them. As far as A!Piccolo knows, Cell wants to team up with them.
Which means that while Piccolo has the reputation for being clever and smart in canon, in the abridged version he actually deserves it.

When those Popo eyes showed up...first time I was legitimately scared of him.

The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby!I swear, when I first watched Piccolo vs 17 back in the day, I thought it was pretty awesome that Piccolo was actually standing a chance against these guys. Then TFS showed exactly how the fight went and jeez, did it have dumb moments. The backflips were funny enough, but the tug-of-war push that looked like a children's playground game had me in stitches.
Also, as someone who grew up with a bit of a Gag Dub of Dragon Ball, I agree that the series wasn't that serious to begin with. The Portuguese version of the Cell saga had Cell cracking jokes at everything that moved, from Trunks' unusually long stare, to him kicking 16's head like a football.
It also featured Dr.Gero claiming that Vegeta gave 19 a disability, 16 claiming that they can enter Goku's house because he has a copy of his key (they really did open it peacefully), and Piccolo calling a Dende a "little green turd" (and meaning it as a compliment). There are occasions where I'm just comparing which version can get sillier.
As a side-note, I'm glad History of Trunks will call them Cyborgs. That's the name I grew up with.
That's what I meant. Vegeta and Buu did the same. And yes, it was funny. But I think it's funny as a joke against the genre itself, because if you took the music out of certain anime fights, they'd probably look and sound ridiculous with all of the screaming. Vegeta and Buu did a similar thing, only Vegeta got steamrolled.
Oh.
...I mean, why do the fights even have the "body gets dented by a punch" thing? In this and the 19 fight.
I'm not a roboticist, but I know the human body has a lot of very delicate parts. Most living things with organs have fairly delicate parts. Parts that can be fairly heavily damaged by having the chest caved in even temporarily. And also the chest doesn't rebound quite like that. And from what I know of most machinery, that's probably also the case. Nevermind that 17 is mostly human anyway.

Ah, yes, definitely
Really good parody, though, love it that TFS doesn't take the easy route of just pointing out that something odd is happening, they actually take it to a comical conclusion (in this case, lowering the volume and taking away the music was enough).

Artistic License. Some eyeballs double in size if someone gets their balls kicked, but it doesn't mean they went blind. Yamcha lost a tooth that grew back, too.
As a side-note, this is something I like about Buu. He's a cartoon character whose cartoon physics are taken as a serious threat. Joins the silly and the serious parts of Dragon Ball into a single villain.

In Piccolo's defense, while the rest of the fight was incredibly stupid and his chances against 17 were never impressive, Hellzone Grenade was brilliant and probably would have done a ton of damage if 17 didn't pull out that barrier move - which he's never displayed before and thus Piccolo could not be expected to account for it. As much as I complain about the Cell Saga, Hellzone Grenade is one of my favorite moves, because of how intensely creative it is, and how cleverly tactical it is by weaponizing the opponent's own ability to dodge the attack - as opposed to most of the new techniques unveiled in this arc being "Energy attack, but BIGGER!"

Yes to be fair to Picollo, he (and everyone else) did not know how powerful Cell had become until Cell powered up in front of them.
That and he was surprised that the androids didnt even know Cell was a thing.
He does blame himself for not noticing Cells approach though, by being too caught up in the battle
