Dragon Ball trivia...we all learned something here today.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.None of which as ridiculous as the muffin button, which saved Goku's life, Vegeta's dimensional busting screen, Popo, and plenty of other TFS gags. Nothing TFS have added have made things more serious or dramatic than the original.

a little bit on-screen is not a little bit in-universe. It jumped forward while nothing but waiting was happening, not very hard to understand.

The original series does have a dimensional busting scream.
Which brings me back to the bubblegum monster named after a disney song.

I think part of the reason why DBZA works so well is because one of the big problems of DBZ in general is its padded out way too much, even in terms of the manga. If you want to follow the story, it can be a little frustrating having to watch episode after episode until you find the stuff that's really good. DBZ NEEDED an abridged series - way more than Yugioh did.
It's a lot easier to do a DBZA marathon than a DBZ marathon, that's for sure.
The *Legendary* Super Saiyan is motivated by a crying infant! He is a literal giant f***ing baby!Yes, I was being obtuse for comedy, mostly because of the opportunity afforded by the wording.
I have a message from another time...I mean.
It's not like the muffin button is that out of place in Dragon Ball. What with the rabbit that can turn people into carrots that gets taken to the moon to make toys for small children.
...The moon that gets blown up like three different times.
Wait, that's not silly.

The first arc really isn't indicative of Dragon Ball as a whole. That was Early Instalment Weirdness and such a thing would be really out of place in later arcs.
God never restored the moon after the second time.

Except the Buu Saga, where the weirdness comes back in full force.
But I feel like the Buu Saga was when the show started to get self-aware.

Hence, DBZA. They make some of the more boring parts of the series more enjoyable by fleshing out side characters a bit, and they play it straight in the dramatic moments (like seriously, Goku going Super Saiyan? Thank god they didn't make that a gag.)
Is it better? Not necessarily. It's a parody. But it's a parody that's enjoyable on its own, and not all parodies can say that.

I know plenty about the source material.
The Android/Cell saga kept being rewritten and the main antagonist kept being changed.
The next villain is made of bubblegum.
In the very first arc the world was saved by a perverted shape-shifting pig wishing for a pair of panties.
In the "current" arc the world is almost doomed because Vegeta is such an arrogant tool.
And somehow Vegeta and Trunks go in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber a little bit before Piccolo fights 17 and come back a day later.
