The thing to remember is that Dragonball started off as a comedy series. It only really transformed into a action series after the fight scenes got super popular.
Character Depth was never really the prime directive.
What she said in the dub of the tournament does provide a plausible alternative. It's possible that in the trauma of their Unwilling Roboticization, or somewhere in the process, they lose their memories. At least, of their names. If not, that still gives a few other plausible options:
- the twins held on to their memories that they were twins, which would be in character
- the twins aren't really related
- Gero reminded them for reasons.
Considering they now have stone and color themed names, I'd like to know if there is a variation on Maron that is some sort of stone. Similar to the multi-faceted pun that is Pan's name.
Wow, was that really Takahata101 as Cell?
God, it's so surprising to hear a performance so chilling from the guy known for voicing characters like, say, Nappa and Guru...
I have a feeling that he's going to end up rivaling Little Kuriboh's Frieza in terms of Nightmare Fuel.
No beer?! But if there's no beer, then there's no beef or beans! They still remain very humans traits of personality. 17 remembers his loving for driving, 18 keeps her vanity in her search for pretty clothes after Vegeta ruin hers, and they both remember they are related. So I don't think they really forget their human lifes or their names.
My headcannon always was that they were runnaways before the android transformation. World of God says they were delinquents. And I think they abandoned their birth names after being kidnapped by Dr. Gero as a way to abandon their old lifes, that meant nothing to them. It's easy to see that after being free of Gero, they still had nothing to go back to, and nothing to do with their lifes.
Anyone else really looking forward to Taka's Perfect Cell?
... You mean Alucard, right? And yes, that's Takahata101 who does that voice as well.
Well, it looks like they are going to do as good a job with making Cell creepy as they did with Freeza.
For anyone who still has problems with the website, this is what people are talking about,
I like how Takahata actually sounds like Dub Cell. Whether that's intentional or not is irrelevant he's still doing a fantastic job.

Goku will survive the explosion, but through the magic of clever editing, SSJ2 Gohan will kill him himself in either a fit of blind rage or carrying out 16's last wishes.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI love the, "Hello, friend," line. It's a variation on the original "brother" bit that Cell used, but fits more perfectly with Abridged Piccolo's lonely personality than brother would.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I'm sure Kami will appreciate the fact that Nail got a pool table.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I really hope Nail or Kami don't end up fading into Piccolo's subconscious (as Nail theorized they would... eventually...) at some point. They're both way too lovable as separate entities.
Of course, Nail's been in there for years now and shows no signs of going away any time soon (in fact, he seems to have dug himself out even more of a presence if anything), but I keep wondering if maybe some dramatic moment somewhere down the line will find Piccolo all alone again...
Also, is anyone else actually aware that Nail is still inside Piccolo's mind - or even of what happened to Nail at all? He never tells anyone onscreen (as far as we know, Dende doesn't know - though I don't think Piccolo ever tells him in the original either), and it'd be really funny if everyone just assumed Piccolo was going nuts - especially now that there's two voices in his head.

"Please don't leave me alone with him!"
And then Piccolo will finally discover the joys of multiplayer Minesweeper for himself when Buu eats him.

x5 "Quoting times"
Piccolo: I'm Not Nail.
(In Piccolo's head)Nail: Technically you kind of are.
Piccolo:(annoyed)Shut up, Nail.
Dende: Why are you talkin' to yourself?
...Or I could've went the easy route.
At the near end of Season 2
Piccolo:(Regaining consciousness)...What the?
Dende:(torwards Piccolo)Welcome back Nail.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.

^^I meant how is it possible that if they did actually have names that nobody ever said it on screen?
The theory in post above me is looking very probable.
Though that has to be awkward in conversations: "Oh yeah, this is my wife. She is Eighteen" :P
