A bit too much exposition to be a really funny episode but it was alright.

I was very much meh about hering Vegeta and Bulma having sex but the "the fuck's a condom?" line made up for it.

Didn't have any really laugh out loud moments but the most interesting part of the episode was the fate of Future Yamcha.

Loved the episode though I think playing up Goku's neglectful father angle is becoming a tad uncomfortable.

Ok I have to ask, how much filler was there between Trunks showing up and the 3 year time skip? I don't remember any of the latter stuff at all for some reason.

Not that much, just a bit which mostly served to adknowledged that yeah, three years went by.

The Goku and Piccolo driving filler is based of a cover from the manga.

The guy didn't even know he had a second child, though he could've had a psychic conversation with his family at any time. Goku as a neglectful father isn't exaggerated, it's just accurate.

I've just realized, I'm fine with waiting a little longer for some new plot episodes if it means getting to see Kai Abridged Season 2. That's likely because my most anticipated stuff of Season 3, 18, Kamiccolo, Cell, Tien's last moment of relevance, and 16, are all still a ways off.

Heh, I liked the "smell like copper" line. Subtle.

Everything relating to Bulma this episode was great. Tien too, even. And Goku telling Yamcha "You're my friend." to pre-emptively bring him back from the brink of depression/suicide, was incredibly touching.
Haha, cars. Piccolo is such a bro, and the stinger was great. The episode ending, though... I have NEVER been able to get behind Bulma/Vegeta. Ugh.

[up]Not saying Goku's not neglectful. But here he's toeing the line between neglectful and outright abusive.

This episode was pretty decent. Yeah Vegeta and Bulma only works if you forget Vegeta's past or don't bring it up.

The Reaper Games starts anew.

Honestly, Bulma's was a bit of a sociopath in Pre-Z Dragonball. So her and Vegeta isn't exactly far fetched. A past with stuff they both probably don't want to dwell on gives them something in common.

The fact that he went out of his way to take Gohan with him to train helped, in my opinion. Yeah, the training itself was harsh, but what else would it be?

For me, it helps that there's no true malice in Goku's neglect. He's not a bad father. He's a brain-damaged father. That's a very important, extremely fundamental aspect to his character. This is a man who thought marriage was a food, and during Chi Chi's pregnancy, he thought she had cinnamon buns stuffed in her shirt. He doesn't even understand Chi Chi's relationship to him, having referred to her as "beautiful lady who lives in my house" during a fantasy once.

Goku probably isn't emotionally capable of being a good father, simply because he doesn't have the ability to understand what fatherhood is. To him, Gohan's just like any of his other friends, except he hasn't known Gohan as long. He cares about Gohan like he cares about Krillin, Yamcha, or Tien, but he can't be what Gohan needs in an actual father. That's not really his fault; it's a consequence of smashing his head open on a rock during infancy.

This Goku really cares for Krillin, too. I like that the humans got a bit more respect this arc even in this series: Tien could be funny without being a total ass like in "Bald This Way", Goku cares about Krillin's fate, and even Yamcha's too.

I thought the episode was hilarious. They aren't making Goku a complete idiot which is what I feared they would do but make him pretty much an Adult Child.

Vegeta/Bulma was bound to happen. Surprised they didn't bleep out "THE FUCKS A CONDOM?!" though. Idc its just inconsistent lol. Btw..Dodge Bitch needs to be released immediately...

Man, this stuff works so much better when you have functional memories of what was originally happening. Like the stuff with Piccolo laughing from offscreen and then correcting Goku's explanation. Whereas in the original, Goku was just not telling them about the Androids at all, at which point Piccolo said 'yeah, I have big ears for a reason. I think we all deserve a chance to save ourselves from the evil robots.'

Also, I loved how the Muffin Button saved him. As soon as he cited the muffin button as how he survived, I knew it was going to turn out to have really saved his life.

I was looking forward to how they were gonna handle Piccolo over-hearing Trunks' reveal, and loved his off-in-the-distance laughter. And he and Goku driving cars is never not hilarious.

@Tobias: There really aren't many ways for Gohan's conception to have taken place where Chi Chi wasn't a rapist.

...Goten's conception has the slightest possibility for it to have been Goku initiated or consenting when he had some concept of what was happening, but I'm still not certain.

EDIT: About the episode itself, the "Sun Wukong" joke made me laugh more than it should have.

There is no Goku pairing that doesn't come with a lot of rape vibes. Except I guess in an alternate universe where he never hit his head. But then he'd pretty much be a completely different character anyway.

[up][up]Ehh. That's true here, but he doesn't come across as brain-damaged in the original. Or at least not to the same extent.

But, anyway: 'Highway to HFIL'. Discuss.
