Yeah. The one thing Genma did right is that he actually did train up his son into an incredible Martial Artist.
I should also point out that his wife does eventually find out about their curses in the manga, but still concedes the point that Genma did exactly what he said he'd do and spares them both.
Genma (when he's not being a lazy idiot) is an incredible martial artist...but he's still an asshole without a doubt.
One Strip! One Strip! It's a chicken-and-the-egg problem. Did DBZA create a renewed interest in the franchise, or did it ride a cresting wave of interest that would have happened anyway as people who grew up with it reached an age where a desire to distance oneself from one's childhood interests is replaced by nostalgia for them? It's impossible to know, because we can never say for sure what would have happened. My personal suspicion is "a little from Column A, a little from Column B."
Regardless, it's hard to imagine what advantage Toei thinks it's getting out of all the takedown notices. I can't imagine too many people who watch DBZA but don't consume any of the official products like Super / the video games / etc. would be happy Toei customers if DBZA never existed or disappeared tomorrow. If such people do exist, whatever lost revenue they represent for Toei is likely less than a rounding error on their quarterly income sheet, and meanwhile discouraging people from engaging with your franchise with such heavy-handed tactics isn't how you maintain a happy, loyal customer base.

I don't think Toei cares about what advantage they are or are not getting. They just don't want people making fun of their cartoon.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Battle of Gods is one thing that revived interest in Dragon Ball.
Nothing ever happens because of just one thing.
But yes, having good new official content that wasn't just yet another video game taking us from Raditz to Cell all over again certainly didn't hurt.

The first episode of Kai premiered less than a year after the first episode of DBZA. That is way too short of a time for them to have decided to recut the entire series, redub all the vocal tracks, and even commission new music, all as a spur of the moment reaction to DBZA.
Toei probably wasn't even aware of DBZA at that point. The first takedown didn't happen until August 2009, months after Kai premiered.
Yeah, everyone jokes about the "Goku is a terrible father" thing but I'm watching the TFS Plays Kakarot thing and Kaiser and Lani bring up that they only hammered that in for japes and that Goku is a great dad who cares about his family, he's just scatterbrained.
They also bring up Vegeta and how he's the cause of WAAAAAAAAAAAY more problems than Goku.
The only thing TFS really revived was a renewed obsession with "Piccolo is Gohan's real dad", which Kaiser himself has admitted to regretting.
My various fanfics. Now that's it's had time to sink in more, I really do regret that the Abridged is ending, if only because I truly wanted to see their take on Buu.
I mean, did we ever find out what character they were going to entirely edit out?
One Strip! One Strip!Oh yes!
And Goku and Vegeta's rematch too!
There's so much I was looking forward to there. Buu does have a lot of stuff I like, despite it's flaws.

They implied it was Mr. Popo; keeping the DBZA version of him around runs smack into Story-Breaker Power issues that they were already having to work around in by making Mr. Popo high in the Cell arc.
I remember they did their BT 3 let's play and they said that when they did Buu, Majin Vegeta would be "mid life crisis Vegeta"
It would have been a blast to see.
¡PONLE QUE DIGA!:"¡HUMONGOSAURIO HASTA LA MUERTE!"....
I mean, that's kinda what he is too.
It's literally Vegeta wanting to relive his glory days. That's so perfect.
One Strip! One Strip!

...who?
