Is there a reason Trunks bothered with the sword to begin with? I mean, he's already the third most powerful being in the world in his future, and the gap between him and the next two is so great that a dinky bit of sharp metal isn't going to make a difference?
Did he just practice with the sword to practice it on Frieza? Did he just think it was cool?
Also, at some points during this most recent episode I almost thought they were going to do a MGR:R reference, before I remembered Lani apparently hates it.

Well he was outmatched against the Androids and was probably just using everything he could to survive.
Maybe fighting with a sword instead of his fists was influenced by his mentor losing an arm to the Androids.
The out-of-universe answer is that is was a stylish way to quickly kill Freeza.

The last 2 DBZ movies ARE canon (the Hildegarn one and Battle of Gods).

Long live Cinematech. FC:0259-0435-4987Well, the Hildegarn one explains where Trunks gets his sword from, and Battle of Gods is declared officially canon by Toei.
Long live Cinematech. FC:0259-0435-4987Stooooooooop the rumours.
Trunks can't have gotten his sword that way, because Movie 13 doesn't happen in the timeline where the Androids destroyed everything. Even if Movie 13 explained that, it doesn't make it canon.
And no, nothing has ever been said about this new movie being canon. There is no such thing as official canon.

They were never declared canon, Toriyama just had more involvement with Battle of the Gods than in most films. Don't confuse that with being canon.
Though, I remember someone posed an interesting theory that the whole Hoi-Hirudegarn-Tapion thing happened in Trunks's timeline, but ended with Tapion being sacrificially killed like he asked while imprisoning Hirudegarn, rather than Hirudegarn breaking free and getting Dragon Fisted into pulp. That would eliminate the issue of a powerful kaiju too strong to be killed by the survivors as well as leave Tapion's sword for Trunks to use.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
Since you asked, Tapion gives Trunks his sword at the end of the movie.

Vegeta was bored, but he also vastly overestimated how well he'd fare against Perfect Cell.
It can be both things.
I have a message from another time...
