That's literally what we were talking about...as I said, it's the only instance it happened.

People don't bring it up because the problem there is more about her being dumb in general and not just a bad parent.

Her being there at all is dumb, her bringing the baby is just toppings.

Frankly the only good parents in this series are Videl and Gohan.

Malicious lies! Where you you think Gohan gets his good parenting from? He gets it from Krillin! Krillin and 18 are also good parents.

You know, it's very telling that I completely forgot about both of them.

I'll point out that Mr. Satan is probably a good parent (based on how Videl turned out); we just never really get to see that side of him.

Grandpa Gohan and Ox King also seemed like fairly good parents, based on Goku and Chi-Chi's perception of them.

Well, child Chi-Chi was a bit messed up. I think she tried to kill Yamcha immediately when they met.

I can't hold that against her. Killing Yamcha is how people say "hello".

Interesting analysis on the types of ways that things can interact with the communities surrounding them. I'm guessing the "production values that were, frankly, masturbatory" is referring to stuff like completely remaking the end of World's Strongest and re-creating music tracks like Trunks' theme and SS2 Gohan's insert song.

So, what he is saying is that they pushed the quality beyond of what was feasible?

How doew the division between creators and fans into this? Did the fans not invest enough into TFS, e.g. their merchandise and patreon?

Setting the bar too high in quality made abridging seem inaccessible is what he was saying.

Don't need people who want to get into abridging feeling like they have to live up to DBZA.

No, he's saying that they were raising the bar for Abridging too high, no-one else could hope to compete/collaborate with them, and they were specifically pushing away the idea of community involvement.

...I'm not really certain what he's suggesting people actually do? Like his message is community good, barriers between fans and creators bad, but I don't see much about how to work towards that. The closest to a suggestion seems to the idea that you shouldn't try to put out anything better than what your fans can make, and I'd hope that that message is unintentional

What if, instead of focusing their energies on making one really good series to the exclusion of everything else (including its own release schedule), TFS had focused its energies on creating a mentorship process to bring more creators up to their level? And a community framework where creations could be shared, after You Tube starting dropping the ball so hard in that area?

What if, instead of seeing it as their mission to "make a well-produced work," they had seen it as their mission to give as many opportunities to as many people as possible to take part in the creation of new works?

I mean, certainly there's an argument to be made for community interaction, but I dunno...not every fan necessarily wants to contribute in the way that he's describing, even if its being encouraged - many people do want to just passively enjoy the works being produced. Certainly, I enjoyed stuff like the theme remixes and the redone World's Strongest ending. Surely there must be a way to collaborate fans with fans who lack such resources while still doing cool things (although I suppose there's a difference between doing something because you want to do it and doing something because you think you have to).

Oh God! Natural light!

We'd be down one very good series and have a whole lot of garbage in it's place. The community would be more active in some ways, but there'd be fewer people watching, and the overall reputation of abridged series would be lower

That's the worst outcome...but all it'd mean is that it wouldn't look and/or sound as good.

While there'd be more of roughly the same quality outside of writing.

Except that's not their obligation, if all they want to do and strive for is to make good creative work.

So, getting good at something alienates you from the begginners, and thus improvement is not so great? Not sure if I can follow that way of thinking. Can empathize with the frustration, but I don't "get" it.

I think the issue is that they set the bar so high that if people wanted to emulate them they’d have to put in so much effort that they might as well do something official.
