Well, Trunks sort of proved he had no reason not to do it.

But Cold actually expecting that to work is astounding.

Well, Cold never saw the pure firepower of an armed and operational Super Sayjin. He didn't know what they were capable of.

I would say "well, he did think it was the sword", but if it was, why did he think Trunks would give it so freely?

Because Cold's an ass that looks down on everyone?

Because saiyans are nothing but stupid monkeys, right?

Yeah, I understand Trunks giving it, but I do wonder why Cold thought that would work. Does he really think Saiyans are THAT stupid? Or was he hoping to come across as nonviolent and trustable despite his son's aggressive behavior?

He probably does think they're that stupid. They've been nothing but thugs that care for nothing but killing and blowing stuff up.

Probably both.

Well, considering that Saiyans have that overwhelming sense of pride (Vegeta letting Cell reach his Perfect Form, anyone?) it's really not that surprising.

Wouldn't it be a mixture of both for Vegeta?

This is the man who sold his soul to Babidi just for the power to defeat Goku, achieved Super Saiyan through sheer refusal to be second fiddle, and killed Nappa for losing. EVERYTHING Vegeta does involves pride somehow.

No, it really wasn't. In this case, he was already winning, but way too easily. He wanted a challenge because he's a Saiyan, and they're battle-hungry.

[up][up][up]Still, Saiyans definitely have a tendency to give their opponents a chance when practicality would dictate they just kill them. Goku let Freeza reach his final form, even if his reasoning was different it just seems to be something Saiyans do. They like challenges.

[up][up]Well, yeah, his pride demanded he fight a worthy opponent so he may show off his full skill, rather than waste it on a weakling. That's pride.

Except that's not why he did it. He had already proven himself, now he needed to enjoy himself.

Having such confidence in your ability as to risk ending the world (And, indeed, letting 18 be absorbed against her will, which is sort of a dick thing to do even if she did break your arm) just so you can have a challenge is still pretty prideful and arrogant, though. He underestimated the strength boost Cell would get from his final form and overestimated his own limit.

It's arrogant, but not related to pride at all. And at this stage Vegeta wasn't trying to pass himself off as anything less than evil.

I guess I just conflate pride and arrogance together as the same thing.

There's a difference between doing something for pride and doing something because you're already arrogant enough to think you'll get away with it.

Khfan429 Since: Aug, 2009
#3698: Mar 28th 2013 at 6:58:11 PM

[up]Well, now it's just semantics. Point is, Saiyans have a tendency to do dumb things because they're confident they'll win anyway/they want a challenge. Considering the species as a whole and their Blood Knight tendencies, it doesn't surprise me that King Cold would be aware of this.

Saiga Since: Feb, 2011 Relationship Status: Getting away with murder
#3699: Mar 28th 2013 at 7:02:00 PM

Cold's thing is dumb no matter how you look at it. If it's in the sword like he thinks, then there's no way Trunks would give it up, Saiyan or no. If it was his own power than destroyed Freeza, then taking that sword isn't going to do shit.
