I remember listening to a lot of TFS song the remixed or referenced (that's how I found out about them)

What's with me being a page topper lately?

No one at Toei knows TFS exists in all likelihood, likely some salaryman who has this as a job just sees a a bunch of videos that use dozens of hours of Toei's 80s and 90s footage and gets annoyed. They're definitely not taking jokes from it.

The Funi dub might but the old Funi dub 'actors' are nobodies who make C-list TV actors and video game voice actors look like living reincarnations of Marlon Brando. They have no influence on anything going on in the production.

What about the thing where Funi called in the TFS guys for the Cell Games Reenactment and apparently Toei flipped their shit, and got it taken off the air after one airing, and forced them to rerecord for future broadcasts and the DVDs?

[up][up]No, there are some parts of Super that are clear references to Team Four Star, such as the aforementioned scene where Mr. Popo threatens Vegeta not to break the Time Chamber again.

[up][up] Source for this?

[up] You're DESPERATELY grasping at straws here. It's just a close-up shot of Popo's face with a serious tone. There is a reason why TFS goes the route of "Popo is scary". Because people already thought he was creepy looking to begin with, and a lot of his scenes are vaguely threatening and eerie, especially in his introduction.

Oh gosh are we talking about mr.popo? Because I’m lukewarm on the way they wrote him in tfs, but it’s obly because regardless of which version I watch, he’s just sort of a side character. I like Vegeta or Goku or Gohan mostly. Or Trunks. Also, that scene with Gohan going super saiyan for the first time, so awesome. I loved it. He was so bad ass!

The Mr. Popo close-up joke is definitely a nod to the Memetic Psychopath reputation of Popo.

And like i said, TFS popularized the meme so it definitely inspired whoever wrote that episode.

The animators, showrunners and all those people are not the same as those in the legal department.

People working on Dragon Ball may have seen some of Abridged. Or not. The suits, however, will be thinking in far different ways.

Mr Popo doesn't have a Memetic Psychopath reputation beyond Abridged. He had moments where he was creepy, which predated TFS.

And while it isn't impossible for the gag to be based on Abridged, it seems unlikely. Abridged isn't available in Japanese, it's not going to be very well known in Japan, so it's really weird to think they'd throw a reference in that their primary audience aren't going to get.

Hell, it's still really niche even in the west.

It's not a matter of hostility, it just outright doesn't have the inflated influence that people here think it does. As Saiga noted it's not even in Japanese and thus very unlikely to have been seen by anyone of relevance there. It's not known of by the vast majority of fans even in the West.

Trying to say it had influence on production based solely on a close-up shot of Popo's face is absurd and displays a massive amount of both ignorance and arrogance. I'm not even sure why people want to push that narrative other than perhaps wish fulfillment. Or maybe people thinking the Funi dub team (which has acknowledged it in Dub Text) is more important than it is also.

I wonder if fans in Japan also have conversations about how the newest Avengers movie was totally referencing their favorite Japanese Youtube series.

It's true, it's not in Japanese.

It's in English, one of the most common languages on Earth and which all Japanese students take classes in as part of the education system. A language so popular in Japan that it's printed on practically everything as well as gratuitously used to look cool.

We aren't exactly talking about some obscure dialect of latin here.

Yeah, the assertion that DBZA can't be popular in Japan because Japanese people don't speak English as a first language is, frankly, pretty insulting.

Good thing that wasn't the assertion.

Doing school classes in a language doesn't mean people will be widely proficient in it. And it's not so much that people won't be able understand it, it's just going to be less popular than it could be if available in Japanese (that's why dubs & subs are insanely more widespread than raws).

Hey, doesn't Toyotaro trace western comics sometimes?

Some of the dumb Goku jokes in Super aren't just in the anime, some are exclusive to the manga.

Is Toyotaro enough of a gross westaboo nerd to watch DBZA?
